The old fur buyers that couldn't grade fur would pretend to grade thru your coyotes and simply buy on an average. True!!! But they wanted to excite the trappers and fur hunters, so they would sensationalize a type of coyote that they cold recognize... "Silvertips!" So a silvertip coyote would be labeled as such and was simple to recognize. The white ring on the tail was worthless and the pelt did not look any different than any other. But they would play up the silvertip as No 1 Select grade coyotes and pay lots of money for that coyote. It would also help if the individual was popular and had a big mouth to help get the word out that the buyer was paying $250 a coyote, when in actuality, he was paying $40 a coyote. It was simply a set up, a tactic that cn be and is used today by very cagey fur dealers... Seller beware!

I think that you may be right. The coyote version of grey whiskers. I caught a couple with the white tipped tail last year and I snared one again last night. Check the one in the middle, it's a male.....What a friggin hog!

I managed to find one as well and thought it was odd so I took a picture. What area did you catch him Shakey Mine was in Strathcona County.

I think that there's a bit of an optical illusion going on in my photo because of the fox being closest to the camera. It's a nice one but I think that it appears bigger in the photo. I posted this picture on another forum and the American fellas were really impressed with it. Here's how it looks on a board:

Yes he does and his white tipped one is a beauty dog . He did a great job on it and I'd consider tanning and keeping it if it were mine .

I meant to add a post to this thread......i thought that the white tipped tail was unique to big, old coyotes but I've since skinned two small pups that had the white tipped tail so I guess that it must just be genetics.
