Powder Coating a Shotgun Barrel

I have an old Wingmaster and the barrel has external surface rust. Can I powder coat the barrel rather than bluing it? If so, are there any precautions I need to be aware of?

I got the new rifle barrel on on of my rifles powder coated...shouldnt be a problem

yes you can. Powder coating does a great job and out lasts bluing many times over. I got Corlane to do a couple for me.

Corlanes has done my work plus a few friends as well. They do great work.

Wouldn't the powder coating be more susceptible to chipping, and possibly scratches? I know some of the newer bluing jobs aren't good either, but I figured a real good blue job would be the best.

The powder coating is very strong, anything that mars it would easily mar bluing. The powder coating very weather resistant too, something that bluing isn't.

So my next question, is there any concerns with the curing process which involves temps up to 400* F?

Powder coating would work but a few things to be considered.
1. Paint has a high mil thickness on substrate. Finished thicness can be 1.75 mils to 3.5 mils.
2. Possible coating in inner parts.
3. High tempature coating needed because the barrel "may" get hot.
4. Best prep is sand or poly blasting for 100 percent adhesion.
5. Curing of the paint is 350 to 400 degrees @ 15 to 30 minutes.
6. Powder Paint should be "TGIC " ( polyuerthane )for best uv protection.
7. Small parts are hard to paint and may affect final assembly of the gun.
Recommendation that you take the gun to the supplier to get there opinion.

I would do it I had Corlane do one about six years ago and it still looks like the day I got it back, very durable!!
