What would you estimate the impact velocity to have been?

That happens when you use match bullets for hunting, they tend to blow up.

If all is true.

Thank you.

Hey lots of guys use them, Hornady even says they are ok on thin skinned game such as deer. Lots of guys use them think they are great, lots of guys say they blow up and don't penetrate, say they are unpredictable and unreliable on anything bigger than coyotes and deer. People also hunt with sierra matchkings, which sierra say they don't recommend for hunting. Hunt with whatever you want but I would rather hunt with something made to hunt with than something made for shooting paper which can kill game in a pinch but wasn't really designed too.

Quote straight out of the Hornady manual:

"A-MAX bullets are generally for match shooting, with jackets drawn to less than .0005" concentricity and given Hornady's Ultra-Low Drag Tip. This bullet is also excellent for hunting thin-skinned game."

Like any bullet use your own disgression. Lots of guys using them at long range shooting where they expand well at low velocity way out there. Just don't be too surprised if they occasionally blow apart at high velocity close range shots and sometimes fail to penetrate well.

I've got a number of examples similar to this one that say otherwise...

Bull moose from a few weeks ago. 162AM. Penetrated onside humerus, ribs/lungs, found under the hide on the opposite side. The second shot hit ribs/lungs/heart, and exited.

Killed that moose even with a melted tip?

haven't put one into freezer fair yet, but this coyote seen better days. hit a back leg at 450 m; caught up to him and put another one in while he was running away at 100m. not much gas money for this one.

I'm wondering where you found those inexpensive bullets myself.
Then there is the pic where the bullet/shot placement did its job by blowing the hide clean off the critter.
Job done!
What reload data did you use, of course not to recommend said data without proper Laos developments first and all.

Default Sweet!

Thank you for sharing this, I picked up a few boxes of these last year.. And am totally happy to learn that they will work.. Just fine.

Presently my main projectile is the .284 162gr SST.. Although I haven't had a chance to personally judge how I feel about em, especially after reading a lot of reviews pros and cons..

Also have lots of Interlock, while I was initially searching for Interbond.. Can't find any Interbond at all..

Goes to show on fairly thin skinned game.. The minute differences we as picky perfectionist people desire.. Means very little to much of the targets down range hey?!

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, kudos

The varmint grenade is the one modern Barnes bullet that didn't shoot well for me. Then again, it has more in common with the original Barnes X, than it does with the grooved shank big game bullets.
