Best bolt action caliber.
I’ve hunted with lever actions all my life. .308 blr and .30-30 marlin.
Want to purchase a Tikka 3x but not sure which caliber. I reload so availability of ammo in stores is not gonna be an issue. I hunt moose, deer and thinking of getting into elk. Bears don’t interest me nor sheep or goats. Want a 400 yd caliber. Suggestions?

7 mm rem mag, 160 accubonds or 150ttsx kill everything to 400yrds and look good doing it.

.28 caliber.
If you'd like my recommendation as to a cartridge chambering, I'd say .280Rem or 7mm Rem Mag. Personally I'm a bigger fan of the .280.

Go see what's offered on Tikka's website.
7mm-08, 7x64, and 7mm Rem Mag.
That's it.
All are .28 caliber.

308 winchester.
Itll put down anything you mentioned plus more at 400
Lots of components to choose from. Great barrel life. Less recoil than the -06.

.284" for caliber , for cartridge, in a T-3, I would go 7mmremmag.

Plus he said he reloads already... He wouldn't have to buy anything (maybe different projectiles & powder), he already has the components !

If I didn't already own my two favourite rifle actions in two of my favourite cartridges I would snap up Kury505's Winchester he has for sale
The FWT and the 308 are a grand combination !

7MM Rem Mag + Tikka T3x = 400 yd capability + major recoil
If you handle recoil alright, there's your answer.

I have 3 hunting rifles and they are all Tikka's
260 rem. This is a great deer gun and I already modified an extra stock for my son.
7mm rem mag. This is my go to, and grab it for nearly everything
9.3x62 Battue. This has yet to go hunting, waiting for moose, bear or bison.
If I could only choose 1 and did not need to worry about my son, it would be the 7mm rem mag. It is a laser beam and knocks down whatever I point it at. If you are worried about recoil, the 7mm rem mag is no worst then the 30-06. I did add a little weight to the rear stock and then filled it with expanding foam. Added a Limbsaver recoil pad and it is actually quite pleasant to shoot, even off the bench.

I don't understand why anyone would opt for a magnum rifle when the max range is 400yds?
Can someone explain to me the advantage of using a magnum would be at the 0-400yd range?

Because it's vitally important to you to holdover 19 inches, not 22 inches. Me, I can't tell the difference between three inches at 400 yards, and certainly can't hit it with any consistency. But I think my chances of hitting it are a little better with less recoil.

270 Win if you are fine with a long action. 308 win if you want a short action. Both will be great.

This
I bought a 6.5 cm for this reason.
My tikka t3 in 308 is punishing after 10 or 15 rounds
My 6.5 cm is seriously the recoil of my 22-250. There is none.
I dont own a magnum .

Hits harder.
Were you looking for more than that?
Well the OP said he had a .308 already, and it sounded to me like he wanted something for longer range. While his BLR would do fine, he did specify moose as a target.
At longer range the magnum with higher BC bullets would be my pick, even though I'm a heavier bullet at moderate velocity guy at heart.
Generally you're looking at 2/3 the drop at 400 and 25% more energy.

Most, not all, but most of you need to learn the difference between a cartridge and a caliber.

Not home right now so don’t remember the specific powder. Average loads I know cause max stripped a gear in it years ago ( another story)

All man-made things will have their faults. Hopefully you can find a gun and cartridge combo you trust and enjoy.

Nyksta is right, the BLR has a rotating bolt that locks up like a bolt action. Do you mean it was so tight when you fired that it was a struggle to eject the brass?
Just because you aren't using the "max" amount of powder doesn't mean you aren't hitting those maximum velocities. Velocity follows powder burn characteristics, case capacity and pressure fairly closely. If you had a chronograph, you would be able to approximate where "maximum" is by velocity achieved.

Yes. In finally getting action open I broke a tooth off the spur gear that moves rotating bolt rearward. That told me my load was too hot having caused a stuck case. Plus primer was flattened badly.
