Default Alberta Power Grid Alert

https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/grid-ale...tion-1.6724063

What is interesting is they are warning people about appliances usage, and suggest a few things in regards to your vehicles: don't plug in, or plug 1 to 2 hours before you use it. or use a timer.

How about EVs?

Nothing said about that in this article...

Probably the biggest issue when it comes to the big push to go electric with everything is we clearly don’t have the infrastructure. It’s going to take a ton of time and money to upgrade the grid to even consider it

And this isn’t even addressing the debate if EVs are even ready technology wise

Yup let's plug in 3 EV's per block yet and see how that goes for us

I would like to drive a Tesla. The really fast one just to pin it and feel the noiseless rush. I wouldn’t want to own one.

This is all madness.

It’s like trying to cater a meal for 400 out of your home kitchen. It ain’t built for it.

Yes, when enough EV's get plugged in we're screwed. Most of us on this forum I think will know how to survive. What about when there's a battery fire in the underground parking lot? My understanding is that sprinklers aren't that effective on battery fires.

Not so sure about the knowing how to survive part. How many have a wood stove in the house and a generator?

I think they need to keep a couple of those coal fired state of the art power plants on standby for times like this. Or did the NDP tear them all down when they closed them

Opportunities like this don't come by every day.

All the observations about capacity and generation limits generally fall to deaf ears or get responded to with solar panel farms. We need to seize times like this to show how stupid these plans are; warnings don't help, crises do.

Plug in everything, run it all and when problems occur rag on the brain trust that put us here. Make SURE they know they are at fault.

"Another key challenge is we're getting very little renewable power onto the grid, which is not helping us."
"Out of a total installed capacity of approximately 6,000 megawatts, we're only getting about 30 megawatts out of renewables.“

^What more can be said?

It requires 5 to 8000 gallons of water to cool the battery fire and slow the chemical reaction plus the car needs to be tilted for better access. Fire trucks probably carry 500 to 750 gallons only. Not to mention the chain reaction of fire spreading to other cars.

This happens it'll be like a mini atom bomb. My understanding is you don't put it out, you wait till it burns out.

I think everyone with an electric vehicle should go on a road trip today. Maybe a poker run? That would be fun. Whoever makes it the farthest wins a warm blanket. And maybe a couple of AA batteries.

Sorry for the derail.

An electric heating blanket and an inverter they can plug into the vehicle to power the blanket.

.......to Regina or Winnipeg.
I can go to Swift Current on 3/4 of a tank of gas in this kind of weather and still stay nice and warm. I carry a 5-gal can of spare gas.

Can they?
Can they carry a 5-gal can of spare electricity?

I may light up a brush pile tonight and throw a few tires on it to get the climate warmed up once again

I turned the dryer on. I thought it would be good to run an empty cycle.

Funny as this all is, I just drug the generator from the storage shed to the insulated shop so it might start if I need it tonight.

We’re paying a premium price on substandard service, the population growth in Alberta far exceeds what the province can supply. Now the fairy tale thinking feds are just adding to the problem with al of their illogical ideas regarding electricity.

An article from 2 years ago when we had an extreme cold period.

Nuclear is the only option in my opinion. Not a fan of damming rivers, doesn't seem environment friendly to me. Maybe there is better way to use coal that is cleaner?
