Can't decide! 270 or 308
Hey everyone,
I decided to buy a new rifle, a browning x bolt medallion left hand, I just can't decide the caliber. I already have a 300wm, 7mm rm, and a 243. I'd be using it for deer, moose and elk. No more than 300yds. Out of the 308 or 270, which would you guys pick.
Thanks,
Kevin

308
However, the action means more to me than the cartridge.
If the 270 was in a single shot, the 308 wouldn't have a chance!!

270. Flatter shooting, better sectional density, fewer compressed loads, does well with monometals.
The 308 has trouble with the heavier bullets and the longer monometal bullets and has trouble with the slower burning powders like IMR4350 because of the smaller case size and the larger diameter bullet (although 7mm'08 does okay).
If it was 30'06 vs 270 I would choose 30'06 but in this race, it's 270 all the way.

I dont understand why a 308 or a 270 when you have a 300 win 7mm and 243...

If you don't understand this logic you are not a true gun nut...
Right now I have a 7'08, a 280, a 280AI and a 7 Rem Mag
as well as a 270 Win....and two 30'06's.....and a 35 Whelen.
I think it's perfectly normal.......The wife,...not so much

270 because Jack O'conner said so and 308 because Carlos Hathcock rocks.
Does that help?
One of those choices will make an elk deader than the other but I'm not going to tell you which one.

Single shot 308 is my choice and pushing a 165 grain Federal Premium, Trophy Bonded. I sight in 2" high at 100 yards.
Anything out to 300 yards takes a nap; elk or deer.

The 270 shines with 130gr bullets but by the time it is jacked up to 150gr not so much. A bit more recoil with the 270. You've got the top end covered with the rifles you already have --- The 308 is generally accurate, moderate recoil, wide selection of bullet weights.

The 308 to me is a modern cartridge and the parent to several others, 243, 7mm08 etc. It was designed for modern powders and performs flawlessly and is a dream to reload.
The .270 is derived from the 30-03 way back in 1920's and as much in my opinion is a bit of a compromise as the case was designed for less efficient powders of the day. However, this is now considered a plus because of its capacity.
I'd choose the 308 as there is more reloading data and bullet selection...(and I have the dies ).........saying that I shoot a 7mm08 mostly now and love it
Either is a great cartridge, you can't go wrong.

I go for 308, it's like a 1/2 ton truck. But i'm a bit biased, since i own one.
Shoot mostly moose up to 250 yrd.

Either will make you happy. I shoot a .270, took a buck with 130gr federal blue box this week, complete pass through and I was scooping out heart and lung chowder for a few minutes.
Pick either one that will look good in your cabinet and go to town

.308...
Short action
Stellar barrel life
Cheap to reload for
....and contrary to popular belief will kill stuff just as dead as a .270...

I like the anology...but, the 308 is more like the "John Deere" of chamberings. Built to work!

Actually it's the .280 is derived from the 30-06. .270 is the 30-03.
And I guess that's another one to consider - lol.

Considering your current lineup I would go with the .270. Fits right in between your 7 and your .243. Now you just need a .338 win mag and a .375 hh and a real big bore and a 22-250 and a ........

Setting aside individual preferences, the ballistics of the 7mm08 and availability of quality ammo IMO support this recommendation.
