.257 or .270?

im going to buy a new rifle right away, looking for a mid-size. already own the big boys 45-70 , 300 win , and the smaller ones , 223- 243. some in between. im wondering , the difference between a .257 weatherby mag and say a .270 win , or .270 wsm? any info would be a help.

i don't know much about the other calibers but i shoot a .270 win and love it, great all around gun and shoots like a dream. Minimal kick and great accuracy with good speed. I shoot 130 grain nosler bullets for deer.

With the rifles that you have I'd sell the 223 and the 243.......replace them with the 257wby.

The 300wmag you already have crushes both 270's in all aspects.

Add a 22-250 and we'll have the same gun cabinet

Do you relaod or are you a factory ammo kind of guy?

With WTBY ammo being what it is for cost you best be a handloader if you want one.

270WSM is real fun, heck I have one, but again way cooler if reloaded. This is where I'd go with my choice, the brass life is insane, I've got close to 8 loadings on my brass, and know other shooters who have exceeded 10 loadings per piece. Factory published numbers are do able with normally and often in stock powders too.

270Win is a proven performer, but about as exciting as vanilla ice cream. It is what is most often recommended to non handloaders who want what your looking for.

if you want another rifle, go out and buy it!
Any of the above would be great, but will do nothing more in reality than the 300 on the upper end or the .223 on the lower end.

The 243 is the only one in that bunch I'd junk, simply because the .270 and 257WTBY are much better deer rifles.
The 22/250 is a long range varminter, most of the shots a person takes calling and spotting coyotes can be taken with the .223.
just my experience, mind you, I've owned all except the 270WSM, but shoot a caliber very close to it .
I get better trajectory with match in my 6.5WSM .

I love the .257 Weatherby. The price of brass alone may scare you though.

With the right ammo the .270 WSM stays right with the .300 win mag, it doesn't crush it, thats why I purchased one, and is now my favorite rifle in the cabinet, I would highly reccomend it.

Didn't mean to start a whizzin match but are you pushing 180gr bullets at 3200fps out of your 270wsm??

My point was that the 300wmag out does everything that a 270wsm will do...plus bring in heavier bullets that are not made for the 270.

CRUSH was probably too strong of a word.....but you'ld be have a pretty tough time finding any category that the 270 is equal to or better than the 300 (well, bolt throw I guess

I'm confused.... You have a goodly number of rifles spanning the range already. You can take any game around with those. You want another gun, yet don't even know what you want and can't say why. What would you like to hunt that those rifles can't handle? If you simply want a new peice of wood and steel in your safe, simply go to WSS and say "I would like to buy a gun, any gun. You pick it please. Here's my PAL and MasterCard".

Like Layne Simpson says: "From mice to moose, the .257 Weatherby can do it all." There is just something so cool about seeing that .25 cal bullet in that big fat Weatherby case.

see, i made a huge mistake when i first started buying my own guns, bought my first when i was 19, and went with the 300 win right from the start, then i bought a 45-70. what ended up happening was i started developing a fairly bad flinch. just getting ready to have my shoulder beaten off. the 223 was given to me , and i take it to the range once in awhile. i bought a 243 as a response to the flinching. i find it pretty light weight though. my buddy shoots a 270 for everything and loves it. id like a gun in this class and kinda put everything else away or sell a few, a couple almost never get used.

how expensive is expensive for good factory ammo with 257 or 270 wsm?

factory wby ammo is about $4 per shot,
new wby brass is about $2 each, and they only last 2,3 or 4 shots, then junkm.
you have to have the mindset that it is a 1/4 mile dragster and you dont use a blown and injected top fueller for getting groceries.
the laws of physics dictate that hi performance equals hi $.

the 270wsm is a cool cartridge and i think it here to stay IMO

If it is a recoil problem I was turned onto 7-08 and love it. Great rifle for any of the big game animals you will find in Alberta. The factory ammo will be cheaper then the .257 and less of a recoil then the .270WSM.

I have had both but only kept one and that is the 257 Roy, in a stainless vanguard ordered Boyds thumbhole stock and it shoots quaters at a 100 yards with reloads. I shot 6 deer and none of them moved from where I hit them.

I have shot more than 30 big game animals with the .270 WCF and I owned a 270 WSM too. The WSM could only beat the WCFby about 150fps with all grains when handloaded and that amounts to poot on game. Shoot the WCF with 60gr of H4831sc and a 130gr TSX and go kill some deer/elk/moose/elephants/whatever. That cartridge has served too many good hunters well. And it'll cost you half the price the other ones will to load in the end.

so , i got a good deal on a gun . ended up with a 270 win after all that.
went with the remington cdl . nice gun, laminate ,stainless fluted barrell. think i might put a 4-16x50 monarch on her. thanks for all the tips and info. its great to have a place like this where you can get lots of different input from all different kinds of hunters.

another .25 you might want to look at is the 25.06..... less recoil than the bee and brass can be made from just about anything.... loaded with 85 gr makes a good coyote gun.....
