Best Two-way Radios

OK Fellas

I am looking to purchase some 2-way radios for work in the bush.
Wondering which are good ones.
Ideally, I would like to be able to communicate with my 2 boys while we are herding cattle on horses.
The area is bush covered and the distance is 8-10 miles

Cell phones are two slow and annoying to use plus sometimes don't have service.

Always preferred the kenwoods over the icoms myself. Of course the best out there were the old motorola HT 1000's. Probably not much luck finding those anymore though

If you are shopping at canadian tire for these, you will be disappointed. They wont go 1 mile through bush, never mind 8-10.

You will get what you pay for.

best radios out there are any quality brand you can order direct from the US. Canada is regulated to max 2W for consumer radios, US sells radios at 5W.

X2 on the beofeng radios. You can get them really cheap off eBay. I got them with mikes and ear peaces so no sound comes out of the radio just sound to your ear, and long range antennas for $60 us. You can program them for the radio control roads.

Another vote for the Baofeng UV-5R. 8-10 miles might be a bit of a stretch, although I did reach my wife (in the house) one night on a family channel at over 14 km. That was through thick bush, stock antenna, no mods. If you can get some elevation change that helps. Pretty good for a little 4W handheld.

It's all the stuff in the way that kills you. Helped set up a HAM repeater years ago on the Charlottes, up on a "mountain" by Port Clements (IIRC, I mostly pointed at stuff and looked around). We were able to hit Prince Rupert from there which ended up being about 135 miles line of sight on 5W.

The nice thing about the little Baofeng is that there are very programmable, and you can set them up to work with all sorts of other radios. Getting your amateur license opens you up to using them on 2m as well. They can be set up as a repeater, if you are on the same piece of land all the time.
