Default Federal government employees go on strike

Looks like a few staff are working for essential services. Bulk on strike however.

No passports. Impacts tax refunds. Limited phone service. Probably impacts any license renewals.

Oddly the union said they were instrumental in helping Canadians over the past two years. However the government just said they still are working on catching up from delays over the past 3 years.

I wonder how hundreds of thousands being on strike will impact inflation.

It’s obvious a big raise would accelerate inflation.

News said 1/3 of federal employees are on strike.

I wonder if there will be a noticeable difference in their service.

Heh! Thought the same here.

Maybe the outcome will be that they discover that they can do more with less?

Exactly! Give them a 15% raise, and lay off 25% of them.

Hoping it doesn't affect the already painful PAL renewal times, just sent mine in the other day.
I also agree with the pay raise and axe a good chunk of them.

The last contract (2014), I was part of the bargaining committee and we negotiated a 13% wage increase over 3 years. As much as i don't like some entitled gov workers it is a reasonable offer.
Is this where I get a last cigarette and a blindfold??

Nothing wrong with more pay. It’s the crap the government does while taxing the **** outta everyone that stings.

The millions? Wasted on ukraine ****, meanwhile vets get nothing and natives still don’t have drinking water. Completely ****ed.

The first 3 fall under the "crime" part, and the Trillion bucks is the "debt"...

Sad, but true.

It will not have a significant impact on inflation. Whatever extra they put in their pockets is coming out of our pockets. Just the same cash being redistributed.

This strike puts NDP Jagmeet on a different playing field than his best buddy Trudeau this time.

Jagmeet will have to toe his union bosses line or he will be gone faster than Tom Mulcair with NDP daggers in his back.

Back to work legislation wouldn't be an option for the Turd this time I would think.

Jagged meat said he would not back back to work legislation and neither will the quebexsicans so get ready for a repeat of 1991 when they last went on strike and the libs and Cons introduced and passed back to work legislation.

Table your wants, needs and desires then discuss, pull back then decide if the offer was acceptable......funny though even within a union some will agree to disagree with the final decision....peoplekind.

Who wins?

Minister is doing a good job messaging fairness..

Union has had problems. Poor voter turnout. Confusion voting communication. Angry and rude comments about the negotiations.

So far the public appears on the union side.

That may change as most people don’t have any dealings with the government. Critical Jobs are still being done.

Funny point… someone stated the union demands employees have the option to work from home. However the union is forcing all employees to be at the office (ie strike line) daily. Can’t strike from home. Soooo… doesn’t that prove people being at the office may have value to the employer?

Rumour is the union will strike at airports. They just did an information protest but didn’t block business at 4 main airports. If they did strike at airports or block roads… then the public will turn on the union.

One thing I heard and maybe incorrectly… but the government is offering 9% raise over 3 years. Does that include inflation. I heard that it was 9% plus an inflation adjustment. I can’t confirm that.

Union members are starting to say they want to go to work.

Being seen at the picket line helps the efficacy of the strike. Not really the same thing.

Found this little tidbit interesting today. Of course it could only be here-say, but the source has a sister who works higher up, managing many of these public employees. She’s (my customer) also not one to exaggerate…and she shakes her head at the whole situation.

I was told that the reason the “collective” is so fixated on the work-from-home issue is that many have found a way to “supplement” their incomes thru second jobs (while working at their govmt job).

Many have found a way to work full time (full pay check) from home while doing other work on the govmnts dime.

One individual was even disciplined for (hard to believe, but I was told was 100% true) being discovered to have taught her teenage daughter how to use her computer to make it look like she was working from home…all while this employee was out at a second job (one that didn’t require her to be out of the house on a regular basis, but only occasionally.) This employee was discovered and reprimanded! Not fired, repped.

May not be the case for many or for most…but I can see more than a few individuals taking advantage of their situation.
