Getting used to progressives: how long did it take you?
Just got my first set of progressives. Just put them in 1/2 hour ago. Distance seems fine. Reading a book is tough. Seems I have to look through the lower half of the lense, and through a very narrow "sweet spot" in the centre of the page. Kind of have to slightly move my head back and forth to focus on the words. Is this normal?

I just got progressives last week and notice the same stuff as you but I will say I think I am adapting quickly. I notice now I just seem to land on the sweet spot easier when glancing at reading material. I now notice it much easier than before going from looking down to looking up and having better focus adjustment time.
I think it is normal and just takes a bit of time to adapt...

My very first pair was effortless! I'm on my third pair (purchased two weeks ago) and am happy!
The fish bowl effect passed really quick for me too. Stairs were an issue at first so get used to using the handrail...you'll use it if you haven't already.
One thing that I learned from the first pair of progressives... don't get bamboozled about the quality of lens! Don't buy "those are really good lenses". Get the top quality or second top... I have liked my Nikon Gold or Silver... I've had both and they are same to me. I can switch from new to old and back again with no issue. I needed new unscratched lenses and new frames so went Transitions for the first time with my last pair. I like them, would buy again, except they don't tint inside the truck...thus old pair hangs around with the clippy thingy...

I started wearing progressives about a year a go. I like them and wear them in the house all the time. I have tried to drive with them on and they don't work great. They do take awhile to get used to.

Your brain adapts
My first pair (about 12 years ago) were tough for a week or two. You have to actually turn your head for peripheral and "train your eyes" to hit the right areas for the different distances. But once your systems adapt (and they will quite efficiently and amazingly) it is great to not have to switch or remove glasses for any application.

Used to be able to shoot the arse feathers off a humming bird with a pellet gun during a fifty foot fly by. Then straight to progressives and I couldn't hit the barn door from inside the barn. Yep you'll get used to them I was told many times and you will get used to them. Going down stairs is the kicker for me. One step right in the transition of the lens and it disappears. I look like the blind leading the blind right about then.

It took me a few hours to get used to them. Give it sometime but if you're still struggling in a few days take them back. Had a fellow at work who ended up getting the wrong prescription. Close but not exact. He was having a heck of a time.

Can't say we were not warned..... could have stopped before we
going blind!!! Ok I'll just take a chance on one eye. I'm hard on glasses
and get a new pair every other year, bent frames, scratches and that sort
of abuse. The sweet spot for me is always shifting and just when I'm in tune
with the darn things in comes another pair.

I have had them for the past five years. For my last pair I decided to try a city Optometrist and ended up making 3 different pairs of glasses that did not work. Finally went back to our local Dr and got a pair that works perfect. If they are not right for your eyes make the supplier correct them. I'm just happy that my first pair were made properly, it helped with those crappy ones from the city eye glass place.

Over 20 years, it took about a day. If you accept and they are built correct to correspond to your eye they should work.
I had one set were the lenses were not correct and it was frustrating.

I've worn progressives lenses for 10-12 yrs. My vision went through a series of rapid changes and I think I'm now on my 5th different prescription of progressives. Initially it took a week-10 days for me to get somewhat used to them, other than the sweetspot huntin', and now it just a few hours. Now that my eyes seem to have settled down a bit, I've bought a set straight prescription reading glasses which eliminates that damn sweetspot hunt while doing any kind of detail work.
