Default 7 Rem Mag powder

A friend asked me to help him get set up to reload mostly for his 7RM.
Keeping in mind what may be available, what powders would you recommend to try?

Default 7rem Mag powder

After loading for my 7MM mag for 35 years, I’d say H4831 for lighter bullets, and IMR7828 for heavier bullets.

At this point if you don't have powder... make a list of all of them and buy whatever you find first..

Good Point.
Just fir the heck of it , I found a couple of acceptable alternatives to one of the
most popular powders.. . H 4350. Here are a couple that can replace 4350 quite readily..but may be nearly as difficult to find.

All loaded to the same pressure.. 50,000 psi. Compliments of QL

6.5-06 147 ELD-X

CHGE. MV. CASE FILL

IMR Enduron 4451. 47.5 2936 91.4 %

Ramshot Hunter. 57.7 2906. 90.4

H 4350. 50.2 2858 92.3

IMR 4350. 50.2. 2862. 90.8

Note that the Enduron is very temp stable and appears to be somewhat more readily available.

Default 7mm

175 gr fusion soft point - 64-68 grains of reloader 25 (all loads very accurate)
68 gr coming in at 2770 fps

175 gr sierra spitzer boat tail - 49.5 -51.5 grains of IMR-4320 (again all loads very accurate) 51.5 gr @ 2600 fps. I am going to work up a load using R-19 for this bullet but haven't got around to it yet.

My friend will be shooting 160- 170 gr bullets.
Incidentally, he just called me from LA... Said the only bullets available there are monometal...no lead. He's headind to Pheonix in a couple days. Apparently stuff costs less there. I don't know what the selection will be like so I wanted to suggest powders he might be able to find here. Can't wait to hear from him in Phoenix.
He bought a set of Hornady dies in LA for $52 us.

Does he realize that he can't legally bring bullets across the border without an export permit from the USA? I he is caught they will seize the bullets, and he will either be prohibited from entering the USA for a period, or he will be put on a watch list, for future visits.

He says he asked at the border and was told he can bring anything he inquired about including powder. He plans to bring bullets but not ammo.

Which customs,Canada or USA? Canada Customs doesn't care, it is Homeland Security on the USA side that enforces this, as it is USA law.

Canada border services is ok with bringing in reloading components but US Homeland and Border folks are not ok with individuals exporting those materials from the US without export permits. Good luck to your buddy if he gets checked…

Imr4350 for the 140 to 145 ... imr 7828 for 160 to 175 and fairy dust aka rl26 for 160 to 175 ... with the right gun you are able to get up to 3300 with the 140 ...3200 with the 160 and 3100 with the 175...all around powder is imr7828 which is what the original rounds were built on and originally the off the shelf 175gr round nose was loaded to 3100fps with imr7828...I have tried h1000 and retumbo but it did not work well enuff 4me...work up slowly
