LOL...that might not be a direct quote.
Had an opportunity to do an interview with Carolyn Jarvis from 16:9 The Big Picture today regarding feral horses in Alberta. What a pleasure her and her cameraman Pat were to work with, true professionals. It was cool, they tracked me down from my comments on the board here. Guess you never know who is watching.
Now to wash this make up off

Good call SH.
I'm 100% with you on this issue.
I like horses and ride several times a week, but the wildies are a problem especially on the Elbow, Bow and Sheep drainages.

Isn't it obvious? Those people who think feral horses have no place in the wild.

Big thing with this is they were only looking to talk to people that are against the horses and that find them a nuisance. They werent looking for anyones opinions for the keeping of a few herds. Pretty one sided biased reporting if you ask me. And yes I to was approached by the producer but my point of veiw wasnt on the side they wanted to report!

the gov't should hire this guy for "rounding" them up. i spent better than a decade hunting in the 316/314 area and learned to hate them. i was charged by that bloody stallion 6 times in 3 years. never did pull the trigger on him, he always turned before my set point of no return. the damage they do is unbelievable, not to mention the giant piles of poo everywhere.

I was also charged by a stallion last winter west of Bragg Creek. It was at dusk and I think he thought my pup who was walking beside me was a predator. I had the pepper spray out and if it was not frozen I would let him have it. He turned back at the last minute. There are getting to be too many horses out there. Time to harvest some of them.

They can portray anything they want. Just a bunch of BS. Only 209 believes it.

LOL...actually that was my real concern Honda that they could portay anything they wanted but as it turns out the crew has been travelling around Alberta all week interviewing people from all sides of the issue. I was actually very nervous about doing it as I was afraid they were setting me up to be the bubba hunter. I was actually afraid they'd be very pro feral horse. As it turns out she's a national reporter with an impecible repuation that was trying to get a very unbiased story. I'll be but one part and view of that story. I have to thank walking buffalo for being my behind the scenes coach and fact checker. I think he prevented me from sticking my foot in my mouth too many times. It will be interesting to see the final project and see if it is swayed one way or another. The feeling I got from her was that it wouldn't be despite what our resident expert says....

Sort of amazing who snoops around on this forum looking for a hot issue.
I wonder if we could sell those horses to Belgium and France with the sticker "free ranging" on meat packages? Just like chickens.

Isn't that a big surprise SG ? It's called "Freedom of the press " , they only tell you what they want you to hear . If your opinion differs from theirs they don't want anyone to hear it ..

My experience with the wildies is mostly in 318/320. I know a couple of guys up there who used to round them up years ago. There is a quarter on the edge of the forestry west of Bearberry that was fenced for the express purpose of rounding them up and bringing them in. He had to stop about 20 yrs ago.
I can remember running into him or his helpers occasionally out there and up on the Clearwater/ Tay river area.
I didn't see a lot of colts in that zone, there are a good number of cats and wolves in there, we ran across kills in a number of areas each season.
All I can say is there are a lot of horses in that area, biggest herd I saw was on the west side of the lake, to the west off the north end of Brown crk, about 150 animals. There were likely another 75-100 or more on Stafne ridge between the James and the Red. Likely another 100 in Parker valley. Since that area got logged in the mid 90's, they are a lot more obvious.
I've used them as cover to get to animals, had them bust me on a stalk, and been charged by them, and had them fool me into putting on a stalk on noises they made where I couldn't see what made that noise.
They are all over the place in there, they use and create trails in there.
But, even though they are a magnificent creature, I don't really think they belong there. They do need to be managed somehow.

It is so good to see a little scientific facts injected into a topic rife with emotion and anecdotal tales.
