Jay, that totally SUCKS man! My hunting partner and fellow arborist compleatly tore his bicept off the bone on a tree job. The sound was louder than a .22 going off!

They did NOT get him under the knife quick enough, and the lower 1 1/2" of his bicept atrofied and had to be removed. That right arm has never been the same again. He put his bow down for about 5-6 years after. Although he has managed with it in the past 4 seasons and killed a few deer.

I really hope your injury is nowhere as severe and all goes well. Stay on top of 'em though, and if you have to go under the knife, get in asap!

Take care!

So sorry for your dilemma, but please take a bit of advice from one who has torn muscles , patellas and ligaments in sport and my line of work.
DO NOT PUSH THE ENVELOPE ON RECOVERY!!

The elk season will be there next year, but if you are not fully recovered and able to shoot as well and comfortably as you could before your injury, you could cause permanent damage to your bicep, or at least miss next year's season as well!

1 bottle of whiskey , 2 tylenol , and a piece of soft chewing leather . That should make it easier for hunting season . Or at least a heck of a lot of fun.Of course I am no Dr., but I did see an actor play one on T.V. once.

Couldn't agree more. I've had my share of injuries and never let any of them heal properly. So far I've got a bum ankle, a bad back, my knees are starting to act up and I'm 23 friggin years old. Don't want to know what kind of shape I'm gonna be in 10 years.

When I was 18 I worked for a cribbing company and pulled a back muscle bad. Doctor said that I should be off for 10 days at least. Went to hand in my WCB form and next thing I know they've convinced me to go back to work because "the crew really needed me." Anyone that's had a pulled back muscle can imagine how working with it felt. One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. To this day I can still feel it if I move the wrong way.

Listen to your doctor!

I tore my left bicept in the spring of 05 playing fastball, and although it's not a complete tear it still causes me some difficulty. I also tore my rotator cuff at the same time, so when I went to have it checked out, I was told that the only way they could repair my bicept was to drill holes in the bone and attatch the muscle that way, because it had already contracted and they would not be able to connect it otherwise. After they did a MRI on my shoulder and said that I had partial tears there also, I was told that surgery was possible for both repairs but the Dr. could not guarantee me that either would be better and that it would be a painfull recovery. So I turned down the draw on my bow and started to shoot after a few months. My bicept still bothers me now at times (like ladder climbing) but I am able to pull my bow comfortably again. When I practice I try not to overdo it and have longer rest periods before shooting again. I don't know if this helped any but just sharing my experience. Oh yeah, I quit playing ball also, but I can still hunt!!!

I had a partly torn Bicep and had surgury to repair it. They had to cut the arm open to see if it was possible to reatch and then cut the otherside of the arm open to do the reatachment. I was in a cast healing for a couple months and then had physio for a time.
My golf game still sucks but I can shoot my bow ok. I can do pretty well anythink like I did before without any trouble but I guess I am aware of the possibility of reinjuring it and so do not attempt to "Curl" exxessive weights.

I would say have the surgury as soon as possible. If you wait too long it may not be possible to repair properly.

A guy has to make choices!
I don't shoot big rifles anymore, even the 12 gauge shotguns are languishing in my gun room.
I don't pull heavy bows either, nor do I put in a day of work like I was able to 20 years ago.
But it's all good, as I can still get put of bed in the morning and walk away from it!

maybe try shooting a recurve, or if you have good teeth....(trying to be funny but it could work?). my hard core bow buddy has always said that if he lost any ability to pull his bowback he would sit in a stand with 7 crossbows set up for the speed toungue! crazier things are done by less fortunate people every day. Are temporary disabilities such as this applicable to crossbow disability permitts?

Never tore my bicep but I tore my Achilles tendon playing football , compressed the vertebrae in my neck playing football , and separated my shoulder lifting weights . The key thing listen to the Dr I myself didnt and it ended up worse . I thought the stink was more important to have a shower and cut off my own cast yeah that's gotta be the stupidest thing Ive ever done . Ill never do that again . Just make sure you lissen to the Doc . And make sure you see a specialist in sports injury's as a torn bicep isn't ment to be dealt with your regular family doctor . I learnt the hardway .
