Question 17HMR and scope? What should I get?

I'm thinking of getting a 17HMR so do you guys have any recommendations on one and what would be a good scope to put on it? I want one in stainless heavy barrel and can't spend more than $400 for the gun. I have been looking at the savage BTVS, BVSS and the FVSS. For a scope I want something in the 16-24 max zoom range and preferably under $150, I realize I won't get a really good scope for that price but I don't think I need a top of the line scope for this gun. Are the tasco scopes any good? I've been looking at the tasco world class 4-16x40 and the varmint/target 6-24x40. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Savages are a good option for sure,

out of your choice i would go shoulder some and see which you like best.

I had my eyes set on a grey lam Thumbhole stock and once i shouldered it I didnt like it at all. couldnt get a good cheek weld.

As for scopes there is a few in that range. I ended up with a Tasco 4-12 X40 AO.

Its not the greatest but gets the job done.

I bought a heavy barreled varmint gun once and hated it cause I like to walk around and change locations. I didnt sit for hours in gopher towns so i sold it. I bought a savage combo in a 17 and very happy. So fun to shoot. Very accurate. The scope is nothing special and looses zero once in a while so i want to up grade to the scorpion optics sweet 17. Should be good enough. All my kids learned to shoot with that gun and now they can shoot centre fires no problem.

I few years ago I bought a Savage with the thumbhole stock with heavy barrel and put a Tasco scope on it, I believe it was 2-10x40. Due to the range of the .17 and my old eyes I put a 4.5-14x40 Mueller on it. Pretty happy with the rifle/scope setup. Like another member mentioned it is a bit heavy, but we usually set up a table when shooting, so I don't carry it all that much expect early season.

With the Tasco scope

With the Mueller

I have a CZ in 17 HMR and I didnt have much to spend on a scope. I bought a Cabela's brand, specific for 17 HMR. The optic quality is so so. What I like about it is that it has a 3rd turret; so once you have it sighted in for say 100 yards. You just dial in the yardage you're shooting the critter at; they're toast! Either know your distance or use a range finder. It works for me. crows, magpies, poopy pigeons and gophers are history!
