Waiting time for restricted permit ?
I have waited 5 months.References were interviewed, and they confirmed my application was in Edmonton.Could be they are reviewing more guns to prohibit instead of approving applications.. Anyone else frustrated with this situation ?

Five months is not at all unheard of for obtaining a restricted PAL. Wait until it expires, and you go to renew it, and hear nothing for months, only to be told that they are waiting for your copy of your range membership, when you get frustrated and call the CFO. And don't bother telling the CFO that it was attached to the renewal forms, he certainly isn't going to admit that it was. In fact , it isn't even a legal requirement to produce a copy of your range membership to renew your PAL, it's just the CFOs doing their best to make things as difficult as possible for firearms owners.

That means that it is no longer with the firearms center, it is with the Alberta CFO in Edmonton, awaiting his approval.

Don't know what to say.
My application for the PAL and RPAL was processed very quickly. A few days after my reference called in the application was approved and it went to print...

i dont know if mine went this route.
i called miramichi and got interviewed, then my references called in. once that was done i called the very next day and was told it was approved and the card was being printed.
but i also got my NR at the same time.
or maybe the AB CFO approved it quickly

Mine took a long time with the NB office. I called in and had my references call in. I think it was two weeks after that for my R/PAL and PAL.
If you call the number above they should be able to give you some info on the status, or at least the people to call next.

The Alberta CFO is supposedly pretty back-logged and short staffed, so don't be too surprised.

Have you done your interview with them?
They need to ask you if you trust yourself with smaller, more awesome guns.

My pal/rpal was with the alberta CFO for over three months, sent it in January, just got it a couple weeks ago. No errors on my application, references called in after a month and a half. I did my interview same day. I called every couple weeks to see if there was an issue and they said no issue, just back logged. Meanwhile two friends of mine got theirs in 47 days, one of them even with a criminal record... Their system is messed.

I bought a handgun at PRF in Lloydminster and was there as they faxed in my range membership to the AB CFO. Waited a couple days and called to check on it. I was told by the CFO, after waiting 30min on the line that they needed a copy of my range membership. I told them it was faxed in; they said it wasn't. Went back to PRF and, again, watched them fax it in with the other paperwork. Repeated this four times over several days. A few hours after fourth time, I had approval. I know it was faxed correctly because they have the various CFO's fax on 'speed dial'...

They probably just want to see if you can hold your temper.

When my wife and I applied for our rpal, we sent it registered mail, in the same package. Hers arrived 60 days after applying, no references called in or contacted by the RCMP. Mine still hasn't arrived, 1 month after she received hers. She had never owned a Pal before, I'm on my 4th.
Makes no sense whatsoever.

A buddy just got his recently took almost exactly a year and many phone calls.
First he called about it every couple months for the first ten months or so then resorted to making it a weekly ritual until it finaly showed up.
The typical response was its on so and so's desk and should be mailed out any day.
I dont know if they called any of his referances but i do know they did not call all of them as i was one.

Exactly 2 months from the date I sent my application out in the mail, until I got my card in the mail.

A little math
250000 PAL/RPAL in province of Alberta. With a 5 year expiry that means 50000 expire each year. Currently 5 Firearms Officer on staff in Edmonton. That is 10000 renewal a year per officer. With 250 (max) working days in a year that is 40 renewals per day. On top of that they have new applications and file reviews for license suspension. To say they are under staffed is gross understatement.

But what do the people in Edmonton do? I was under the impression that by the time the application made it to Edmonton the background check and interviews were already done.
