I started another post on this...yours is nicer though.
Mine was just a link to the wicki info.

Funny when they made that announcement they kept saying that most Canadians had never heard of him but I remember being taught all about him in school.

Don't schools cover the world wars and Canadian history any more?
If not, that might explain why we are unable to establish the same sense of nationalism that exists in most other countries...

Right on Pesky. It is darn flippin shame that our school children don't know about him. A dog gone darn flippin shame.

Excellent thread TF.
Yup.
In any other country we'd have schools, libraries, streets and shopping centers named for him...

It's a shame that our kids are idolizing gansta rappers and drugged out over priced jocks instead of people that actually MADE a difference.

He and so many others killed better men than the younger generations heros will ever be...for a buck a day.

I recall having read up on him in my school days; I believe not only did we cover him in class, but I took it upon myself to read more on him in the library. Then then history was again taught to me when I was in the Air Cadets. Frankly I find it surprising that we didn't already have a memorial to him; short of his extensive presence in both history and textbooks.

I don't know if it counts as a monument but the city of Quesnel has Billy Barker Day's. There is also the hotel and casino with the same name. Or is this the same guy?

If you go into a gradeschool or highschool these days you'll find out that they are teaching other countries history and next to no canadian history. At least when I graduated highschool in 2002 thats how all my schoolin in canada went. (the last canadian history I remember is learning about louis reil in 4th or 5th grade)

I agree its a shame that the canadian education system doesn't teach more of their own history. That is definately a part of the us school system that excells over canadas. They learn about their own history from an early age all the way through highschool.

Lots of heroes Canadians have neglected. Lot's of us drive on his Boulevard quite regularly, without a thought. Calgary International airport used to be Mc Knight Field.

Even the Red Baron has trouble being recognized.

Mind you, his remains are at WeisBaden these days.

Any Canadian Air Force Brats out there that grew up in Baden Baden?

True ^, to an extent.

I spent over 5 years in the US school system in my youth ... they focus so much on their own history, that most Americans have no idea about the rest of the world.

Flawed as it may be, I'll take the Canadian school system over the American one, any day.

We're too busy naming roads after hockey players and don't bother with the people that are actually important to our country.

Lt.-Col. William (Billy) Barker, VC ^ ... the most decorated serviceman in the history of Canada, and in the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations.
