Trout ID!
I caught this pretty little thing in Rock Lake, near Hinton, this morning. First I thought it was a Bull trout but now I'm wondering if it isn't a little Lake trout? We've been trying to figure it out for ourselves but can't decide which! I haven't caught either fish before so forgive me if this is totally obvious.
I only got this one photo, he was in and out pretty quick, I didn't even look him over too well. I half-wish I took another photo or two.
Thanks in advance

Rainbow trout. Hard to tell from this pick but it looks silvery with no spots so it's a rainbow. But maybe it's just too much camera flash that I can't see spots...
Let say it was a laker or bull for a minute...hard to tell from this pic. Can't see the tail to see if its forked (although sure looks like it is to me) and can't see if there is black spots on dorsal fin. But likely it does, so then it would be a laker.

Look at the body below the reflective part from the flash, you can see the light markings on the slightly darker background. This automatically indicates that it is a char. So your idea of Bull vs Laker is correct. The deeply forked tail indicates laker to me, as does the more whitish colour as opposed to a light bronze that could indicate a bull trout. I'd say definitely a laker.

Definantly not a rainbow, see front of fins. It's in the char family, so I think your on the right track, lake or bull?

It definitely had spots, pale spots on a silvery-tan body, but no black spots on the dorsal fin - that's why I thought it was a bull. Looking at the photo after I saw the forked tail and light spots on the caudal fin.
Here's the same photo, just..different. Maybe it'll help.

Does anyone have a photo of a small Laker? This guy was maybe 10-11 inches long. I can't find any pictures online of a small Lake trout, lol.

I caught a pile of them on a yukon/bc fishing trip a couple weeks ago. I will get some loaded up on here tonight hopefully.

Thanks Steve, I'm looking forward to seeing them
Daceminnow, thanks for the picture. Did these guys have spots on their dorsal fins? They sure look similar.

Definitely a Laker, Bulls don't have a forked tail and don't have spotting on the tail.
