Aggressive quad mud tires
Hi guys and gals. Looking for a little collective wisdom on a "serious" mud tire for my quad.
I don't want a trail tire, as most of trail quickly turns to mud, deeper mud, muskeg, blackwater and water crossings. Throw in heavy, sticky clay and "loon poop" mud also....
On the other hand, when I'm on old overgrown lease roads, gravel, sand, snow, ice, and every other spot that isn't a deep mud pit, I don't want 3" paddles either.
Something in between the two. Also thinking I'd like to go wider front and back for increased flotation over the really spongey and soft stuff.
Thanks in advance for the replies.

I like itp mudlites. Not super aggressive but good for mud yet bearable on hard pack.

They seem to be an all around favourite, but not so much for the deep sticky stuff.
Not sure they'd give me what I'm looking for.

If I lived closer to you they'd be probably what I'd run, or similar.

Bought my side x side used and it came with a set of ITP Cryptid’s on it. Very serious mud tire. My style of riding does not require such an aggressive tire, I bought it knowing I would have to replace the tires as I thought they would be unbearable for light acreage / gravel road use. 3 years later and they are still on the machine, have never had to take the machine out of one wheel drive to get through anything. Looks like some accelerated wear from the gravel/pavement use, but with those big lugs it is to be expected.
If the right situation came up I would replace them with more of an all terrain tire, but still very impressed with how they handle situations they were not designed for.

My favourite tires for all those situations is the Maxxis Bighorns. They are great in snow, great on hard pack and great in skeg.
They self clean easily and don’t tear up the the top layer of skeg like aggressive paddles do ,causing you to sink to the frame.
Have had them on several machines and would recommend them to anyone.
Most guy look at them and thing , nah not aggressive enough but they are and they just work.

I second the bighorns. If I’m using quad tires it will be bighorns. Radial, handle and ride great.

I third the bighorns. They are great in most situations and are a long lasting and good wearing tire. Have gotten over 6k on several sets.

Be careful with getting too big lugs
i had a set forgot the name and ripped one of the lugs off on a rocky trail
this left me with a 6 inch hole in the tire
I then had to ride back 20 km on a back flat tire
Also be careful some company does not sell you old stock
I then went with a bighorn style tire and have had no problems

Yup I have mudlites on my S x S and had them on my last 2 quads, great tires IMHO, I would not want anything more aggressive than them.

Maxxis Zillas are a good tire. They are light but strong. I ran them on my side by side for 5 years no issues. Heavy machine with all 4 of my family members in it.
I have now switched to Kenda Bearclaw HTR. Very impressive tires. I think much better overall traction. They are heavier but I wanted stiffer sidewall because we were going to mountains. Worked good in snow as well. I try not to get into too much mud but when I did I would say they were better than the Zillas.

My vote would be for Zillas. I ran them on a rzr 800s for quite a few years all around riding with no issues, lots of mud, snow, whatever and that thing did exceptionally well in the muskeg with the zillas on. Now I have a different unit I mostly drive around the farm or for hunting and don’t get out just riding much anymore. I have bighorns on my current machine and they are great for all around use but if I was going back for mud and muskeg I’d get zillas again.

How many cc’s is your quad?
Factory 25” tires?
Bump up to 27 or 28”
I run 27” Zillas on a Foreman 500. 12” wide all the way around.
My next step up for more serious muskeg would be 28” Outlaws, as this is about max to be able to turn them for the cc’s. These ride fine on trails but have an audible hum on pavement. I personally would rather be over prepared for the nasty stuff, as I enjoy getting remote and away from crowds.

I gues it comes down to. Do you want to travel through mud or do you want to throw mud all over hells half acre

I have two older quads with ITP 589 tires, these two in particular stay at the trapline. Mud, snow, muskeg, bullet proof tires. No cut lines, aside from short runs on old logging roads we cut and run our own trails and have never experienced punctures or flats.
Long wearing tires, deeper lugs than mudlites, longer wearing as well.
If these were still readily available, I would put them on all our quads.

I have a Brute Force 650. Take off tires I believe. Factory for mine that year is 25x10 and 25x8. Currently have 26" and want to go 27 or 28". Was thinking of going 12" wide in the back and 10" front. Don't really want to run spacers, or lift any. It's the 09 independent rear, so it has pretty good clearance already, but don't want to make it breakage prone.
I think similarly to you, and go way out by myself and don't want to have to walk out.
Kinda thinking lately that I might go 10" wide front and back so I can rotate them around.

ITP mud lites are a good tire . Very hard rubber . There has been a lot of reviews on them saying they leak air . I went and bought 4 ,had one tire that always leaked . It was just the rim seal . Easy fix with a rim sealer. I would suggest getting the tire shop to do all 4 right away .

I'm running mega mayhem currently and like them. They're great in the mud but still ride smooth on hard ground. Had mudlites for ever and liked them also but wanted bigger threads this time. And cheapest place I found was Revco.

About a year ago, I picked up a used 2019 Polaris XP 570 EPS for the wife.
Came with radial reptiles, 6 ply.
Unsure if these would have been my first choice, mostly because I’d never heard of them.
They are performing very well, so far.

Have heard good things about them.
Fortnine and Revco seem like the best places to shop. Some of the prices at other online stores are out of this world!

Mud bugs. Best mud/muskeg tire I ever ran. Have mudlights now. They are pretty decent too.

I seem to hear or see those those in your list referenced fairly consistently as more serious mudders. Seems hard to get many of those in either the sizes I'm looking for, or in 12" rim...
Anyone else on a Brute 650i (09)? Think I'd be able to fit an 11" wide by 28" up front?

It would appear that “what’s the best mud tire?” has a similar answer to “what’s the best deer cartridge?” or “ what’s the best pick up truck ?”🤔

Well with a mud tire, it's a fairly narrow operating parameter. Of course there's trade-offs depending on other terrain ridden on.
Now deer cartridges.... Boy that's wide open! I probably have 1/2 dozen favorites!

Best all around tire in my books for my machines, if you can’t get through anything, quit riding it like like you are on a couch..

I’m running older Kenda Bearclaws on one quad and newer Kenda Bearclaw HTR’s on my second quad, both are great tires IMO.
