What ya looking to use it for Cory?
My choices would be:
4-12 min for coyotes.
6-18 for most stuff smaller than coyotes, but including coyotes.
??-20 or 24, for gophers, and targets.
24 or 36 fixed for strictly targets.

for the $, I might suggest either a Bushnell 4200 or 6500 series, depending on how much you spend. The 6500 6-36 is about 950
what kind of 223 are you putting it on and what are you shooting?

I put a Bushnell 3200 5-15 on mine years ago and haven't looked back! Was a little sceptical about the scopes but its been great for me
Keep your eyes open for used Leupolds,I picked up a VXll 6-18x40 for $350,put a M1 turret on it,it now lives on my 25 for those stubburn dogs....

I use a 223 for alround plinking purposes and found that the most adept scope was a 6 X 24 x 40mm gets the job done for shoooting gophers, coyotes, fox, muskrat, beaver, badger ....pretty much anything that moves
even smacked a starling on a 5 dollar bet!
Hope this helps with your deision
take care
