When you put your rod away do you cut off your fly and reel your line all the way in? I find when I do that, there's no tension on the line anymore so unwinds a bit and the line gets tangled sometimes.

I bought a rod/ reel case, and now I just hook my fly into the butt end of my corked handle and it keeps tension on my line. Saves time with straightening your leader too.

when you reel in your line keep tention on it. put it between your index finger and middle finger of your non-reeling hand and that will solve all of your line tangle issues.

A good rule of thumb when setting up your rod is to strip off as much line from your reel as needed until you see that you line is level and tightly spooled on the reel. Then run you line through your hands, pulling and stretching to remove any coiling (do the same thing with your leader). Now reel the line back onto the reel evenly so the line is level while maintaining tension on the line with your rod hand. Once out on the water, you won't need to worry about your line nesting and coiling should be at a minimum.

Cheers,
Doc

I'm not talking about while fishing, I'm talking about during storage. He said his line was tangled before his first cast, Just trying to help by sharing what worked for me.
