Default Tips for removing shot from birds

Does anyone have any tips for making sure you get all the shot out of a bird?

I'm talking about migratory birds, so the shot is all steel. Does anyone use magnets or metal detectors or anything?

chew slowly at first, then let them fall to your plate with a little clink.

Butterfly the breast meat and place between two sheets of saran wrap. Tenderize with a meat mallet, and lift by the plastic up to a light. You can see light through the meat, if it is thin enough. It doesn't need to be paper thin, just thin enough to see light passing through.

Works for me, and no knife needed when it comes to chow time!

shoot them in the head, it'll be a non-issue.

I've never really had a problem with shot. Get the occasional one in a sausage or breast, but nothing regular.

May I ask, in a most polite manner, why you asked this question?

Default shot in the meat

When we shot with the lead there seemed more in the meat than when switching to the steel . I find more pass thru with the steel with the harder and faster steel than the lead. And yes , we do the same ...... listen for the clink !

My wife chipped a tooth so unless I can guarantee that there's no shot, then I have to cook it and eat it myself.

What size magnet, and does the meat just lift up to the magnet?

Might work though.

Just get one of those lifting magnets they use in the scrap yard and hold the ducks underneath, switch it on and the duck would zip up and stick to it.

Then you'd just have to pull until the duck tears free and the pellets stick.

Maybe? No?

Aw well, worth a shot.

If you breast them out you will see any holes that go into the breast, it will be all bruised and bloody. I usually cut through the hole to an outside edge and this allows me to get any blood or feathers out of the shot tract and the pellets out as well. If you are just plucking them then im not sure how you would do it.

Ordered one a few years ago from Cabelas, next to useless ended up sending it back. Spent a lot of time tuning it and was lucky to have it work through more than a piece of paper.

Don't shoot from too close. :-)

(edit: Oops sorry that would be prevention, not removal)

No problem, I liked the mental picture of all the ducks stuck to a junkyard magnet.

Thanks guys, this is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind.

Good to know that it's not worth the trouble, though.
