Default Rangefinder reccomendations??

Hey all,

With hunting season just around the corner this is next on the list of must haves, looking for reccomendations or previous good/bad experience with models/makes.

The ideal would be the Leica 1600B but they are v.expensive, the vortex ranger looks good and is reasonably priced.

Let us know your thoughts,

Thanks in advance!

I have the Leupold Rx 1000 TBR and love it. It was a huge help on my father and my trip to South Africa this past spring. I found the glass clearer than the Vortex. The benefit to the vortex is that it is the only rangefinder on the market with a lifetime warranty. The Leica is nice, but unless you are actually going to use it to shoot over 1000 yds, then it is unnecessary. I found the Leupold to be the best product for your money, and i'm a huge Vortex fan. Your best bet is to go to Cabelas or Bass Pro and ask the optics guy if you can try them outside. The guy at Cabelas came outside with me and we ranged a bunch of things at different distances.

BushnellŽ Yardage ProŽ Sport 850 Rangefinder/10x42 Binocular Combo

Cabelas carries this combo and I bought it a couple of years ago.

The binoculars are alright, and the rangefinder hits any yardage I'd care to shoot.

I have a Leica and for long ranging is a must. However, I was extremely disappointed with it for archery ranging. If there was a whisper of a spiderweb, let alone a thin grass leaf or stem, it would break laser contact completely. Identify your needs for one, and I second talking to a salesman to get get the latest information. Good luck.

I have a Leica 1600. If I had to do it again I would buy the Leica geovid range finding binos.

if youre doing a poll I will add that last year I bought the Vortex 1000 and it works well for me and my hunting requirements. if I had the extra $400 I would go with the Lieca as my buddy bought one 2 yrs previous and it is faster then mine side by side. We also use them for our long range practice shooting when hunting is over.
I originally had the first bushnell model in the 1500 arc series. it lasted 1 yr past the warranty. had numerous issues with picking up 800 yard targets.

definitely get the salesman to follow you outside and try a few out.

I have the Leica 1600. Putting in the parameters for your bullet drop/compensation tables can be a little tricky at first. But once you put it in, it's a very valuable tool.

VERY good glass too. Just expensive to have.

In the lower end of the budget, I've had both the Leupold Rx-650 ($300) and the new Nikon Prostaff 7i ($380), and the Nikon is certainly the superior device. With the Leupold I was able to max the range out at 600 yards on reflective targets as advertised, however when ranging cows in a field it had trouble at anything over 250 yards and would only occasionally give me a reading over 300 yards. The Nikon I've been able to consistently range cows over 500 yards in the same circumstances and only start running into difficulties past the 600 yard mark. Reflective targets I've ranged over 1100 yards. The Nikon also has the angle compensation option as well as first vs last target options. My only gripe about it has been the button to power on/range has to be pressed just right, but once you find the sweet-spot it's no problem. Definitely not in the same class as the Leica's and upper end range finders, but it's probably the best option under $400 I've seen.

You can't go wrong with Leica, you get what you pay for and I have been loving mine for years. Happy hunting!

Just bought a vortex ranger, and it was mostly because of the warranty. They're the only ones who will cover the computer inside as well as the external/mechanical components
