Trappers 2015-16
Trapping season is here again so its time for another trapping thread for any pictures, stories, and anything that has to do with trapping.
Post your pics, we all like to see what going on in the trapping world!
I was out at the cabin clearing some trail and added some windows on the old log cabin.
Now that we got some snow i headed out with a load and set the first steel of the year. The Tundra is still earning it's keep and keeps me from walking..

right on jim! super slow on AO for trapping pics this season. its to bad. sure enjoy the pics. especially the bush trapping pics.
not much snow down here either. no real need to use the skidoo. the odd big drift that would stop a truck. but skidooing and fur harvesting go so well together. too much fun!!

As time goes on.....
Went out for the first check and was susprised with the catch. I was having a nice day until i noticed my sleigh was not following me any more. Turned back and found i had come to the expire date on the stock ski doo hitch....
So a piece of rope kept us together for the rest of the trip.
IMG_4014.jpgIMG_4018.jpgIMG_4015.jpg
I went down a short spur line and came back with the payload!
And back to the cabin at the end of the day, almost to dark for a shot. Had a quick bite to eat and on the trail for the 30km run to the truck...

Going smoothly.
Trapping starting to come full swing. Hundreds of sets out now, almost to check and replace...and add a few here and there.

I shuffle sets and put in on the weekends, check in the evenings with a head lap. Takes a couple weeks to get everything out, then it is just a quick check and set on fresh sign. Coyote baits are easy to check at night, the lines are also checked once during the week at night. Just gotta be cautious not to make the runs too long, targeting one or 2 species at a time.

This thread seems to be dead..
I'll post some pics off the long line, a decent season so far. Had a future trapper come along a couple times, he's learning alot.
But not used to 200km trips in rough bush country.
We picked up a dozen marten, a fisher and couple weasel and squirrels last trip out. Got lynx sets out now, plan to head in with the family after Christmas and spend some time out there.
Need alot more snow, only a couple inches.

There has got to be a couple more guys with a camera out there....

My trapping partner is my 2 year old daughter. I have a few pictures that I will try and post of her with me trapping beaver in early December. She comes with me to check traps every chance that she can. Now that we have snow and the bravo can come out she will be with me allot more. Quad is pretty cold to ride on compared to the nice windshield.

My boy holding a huge otter that must have been close to 40lbs. A few days earlier this one and 2 others took a run at my dad who was trying to keep them from re-entering their hole at a beaver dam. Hahahaha

In our part of the world it was a slow start. First time as Jr and helper, and getting to know the terrain and critters in/on/around our trap line. It was also hunting season with lots of pressure on Mother Earth, nevermind the Oilsands.
The day our families left, it was -22, the coldest to date. Now I sit around a pool, in the sunshine of California and we had a frost warning. I slept till 10am, not on the clock.
Can't wait to land back home in the new year and hit the line. Set back up with my team, and trap.

Here is # 76 for the year.
Using short snares and tie wire build right into the snare. This the second one that has caught coyote of the few snares I made this way. Same results on both, little to no damage in the area, reset the locations.

Picked up this nice kitty yesterday morning on the way to my parking spot at the Trapline. Female and two kittens stood nicely as I fumbled for the .22 until our friendly operator drove up and scared them into the trees. After a slightly heated talk I managed to get this one before they all disappeared.
Marten have been pretty slow. Picked up a dozen so far and a couple Fisher. Still great just being out on the line.
Not really trapping related but managed to get out after the brookies last week. Put a dozen on the ice and even kept a couple for supper. This one tipped the scales at 7 pounds even, the father in laws biggest of his life.
Please don't ask what lake we were at. It's so secret I even blindfold myself when I drive there
