Default Question about weigh scale check stations.

up to Airdrie this morning and all the northbound semi-trailer traffic was pulling off on Hwy 2 a couple kms south of Airdrie.

I was suprised to see a AMA tow truck lining up with a dodge mini-van on a dolly behind his truck.
Guess I never thought about it before.

What is the requirement before you need to go through the scales?

And another question.
What's the point to them? Is it inspection or just getting a weight as to what's on the road?

It's both. You have to be under legal axle weight for the truck/trailer. They also do random inspections for safety violations. Loose loads, broken equipment, lights etc. I think they also make people be more honest with their log books. The chance of getting stopped and big fines are a big factor in not cheating on your log.

Commercial vehicles are licensed for maximum weights depending on the build of the vehicle and the trailers if applicable. At times, they do have vehicle safety inspections at the scales. In some cases they can get overweight/oversize permits, it costs extra money for that, or for being overweight for what the unit is licensed for.

Only if its commercial and registered over 4500kg. Personal vehicles don't need to go in. Doesn't make sense really. Your buddy with trailer doesn't have to go in, but a guy in a f350 maintenance truck has to.

And let's say that AMA tow-truck with the mini-van did not pull in- Who's the wiser. They got spotters if a semi blows past on Hwy 2 without pulling in?

If the scale is in service they will have the Sheriffs or Deparment of Transportation at the scale, they will pull over anyone who does not stop. The scales are not in service all the time,I think a flashing light prior to the scale is the indicator they want the required vehicles to pull in

It used to be along these lines years ago any ways

I blew past the scale at whitecourt a few years ago in an F550.

They found me real fast, about 3 miles down the road.

If you blow the scale one of them gets in their car and will catch you. They then make you drive back to the scale and go over your paper work with a fine tooth comb.

They are looking for over weight , unsafe loads etc etc. They also log licence plates. IE if a truck is driving from vancouver to regina and logs in vancouver, calgary, and regina in a 24 hour period they would question if they took the proper rests.

They do this is the US a lot more than in Canada.

There are also different rules if your registered as a provincial carrier or Federal carrier.

All vehicles over the posted weight, not just commercial vehicles.

I drive back to Airdrie everyday and at least once a month (over the last 8yrs) a semi doesn't stop and keeps going. Never seen anybody chase after these guys or do they just radio up ahead?

Some carriers have passes, their trucks are being inspected and weighed at point of loading.

Trucks with a yellow plate that says PIC and pre-pass don't have to go in to scales In the states they have weigh as you go so you don't go in unless they signal you.

The PIC stands for Partners in Compliance, and they don't have to cross the scales except on the PIC on us days.

I never cross the scales with my F350 and tridem flatdeck trailer, and I haven't been chased down. My uncle went by the scales at Leduc with a single wheel 3/4 ton and a tandem trailer and they chased him down, made him go back to the scale, and parked him because the battery was dead on his trailer brake breakaway switch.

They still have to go into the scale but get drive by privileges. I have a registered commercial one ton(10600) and apparently unless I have a trailer I don't have to go into the scale, but if I have a trailer (even unloaded) I have to stop. So said a dot

IMHO, they need to start having equipment inspections for EVERYONE.

As an example, I've seen 3 ATV's (each on a different occasion) being dragged @110kmh behind the trailer.
