Default Neck & Back Pain

I’m in my mid 30s dealing with chronic neck and back pain. I’ve always had some sort of pain for as long as I can remember Just seems to be worse the last couple years and causes headaches. Been to several chiropractors, Nucca chiropractor, physio etc.. and nothing seems to give me relief for any decent amount of time. Was in the field earlier in my working years now in the office so I have been trying to work on my posture.

Anyone have similar experiences? Or anyone in this field that could help?

Thanks

Could be posture or positioning of chair/keyboard, simply sitting at a desk for too long, not enough physical activity or even stress. Stress is often overlooked as a reason for neck/back pain. Foam rollers seem to help relieve the pain/stiffness when my back/neck are sore from having to be at a desk more often than I like.

I suffered from a broken back for years.tried medications but not for me
Finally tried inter muscular stimulation
It is a type of acupuncture. It worked for my pain. This is not pressure point

Cortisone shot to the affected area by a competent clinic, not by your doctor. I have degenerative disc disease and a tenon completely torn off on my bicep and have gotten incredible pain relief from a properly administered needle. Does not fix the problem, just allows pain free life. Will be needed administered receptively as needed.

Office chair And desk height ,don’t sit for an extended period on time try to stretch and moved around . The best height for the chair is best at level with your feet flat on the ground and your lower back make contact with the back of the chair or use a back cushion . Few other option is stretch and moved around and weight wise, if your are a little on the heavy side. Good to take off some weight as well .

Actually tried this about 5 times. Didn’t do much for me. Good to hear it helped for you though!

My doc referred me to a pain clinic in Lacombe, they sent me a questionnaire that sounded like they were setting me up for medically assisted death. I didn't return it. "I feel a complete failure as a person ".

I had recurring back pain for no apparent reason. Wake up and not be able to put on socks. I also tried physio, chiro, meds, etc.

I changed my diet (went keto) and my back pain disappeared. I’m not saying that keto is the diet for everyone, but diet can play a larger role in the inflammation response of your body than most people (including myself prior to this) think.

He probably referred you to the CAPRI clinic ran by Dr Robert Burnham. He is the best there is.

I blame the chair sitting.
Try doing push-ups or planking every day.
That reminds me, I should be doing push-ups or planking every day....

I was sent to a spine specialist in my 30’s. His first question when he looked at my X-rays was “ when did you break your back”?
I said, I didn’t know I did. He showed me where on the X-ray.
Fast forward 30 years and I live with. Cortisone shots. I’m really hoping they last awhile.
I suffer from 5 different ailments in my lumbar region.

I should have mentioned. When I’m not at work I’m fairly active. Gym 3-5 times a week and walking the dog quite often. But most of you are right, the sitting and bad posture has a lot to do with it.

Make sure you have a mattress and pillow that offer the support you need for whatever position you like to sleep in. I had back pain for a long time and eventually found out my mattress wasn’t supporting my spine in a proper manner for a side sleeper. Changed that up along with my pillows and my back pain went away.

Yes, I went through that. In the end I had and have arthritis in my back. Just below the neck and five or six vertebrae. Suffer on and off for many years. Then I started to notice that it was worse when I was chilled. So... I started to protect my back from a chill. Always two layers on my back, even in the summer save for the hottest days. Vests all winter with collars up. It became manageable and over time the pain faded. Now I am always in two layers and that part of my body is relatively pain free. Not sure if it is applicable to you, but it is out there. Good luck.

If you were near Edmonton I would refer you to amazing osteopath who actually was neurologist in his home country before .
I came to him and he didn’t ask where I had problems but pointed every one…
Still a bit mystic for me .

My neck kills me, it’s a old injury from a near fatal vehicle pedestrian accident, nasty.

I got this pillow, I know it seems too simplistic but this pillow has changed my life a little bit.

You need to discover the problem first. Is it muscular? If so, maybe a weight lifting regimen will help. Is it a pinched nerve or arthritis, something misaligned? You need a doctor or two.
Like others have mentioned, your bed may be causing this. Or your chair.
See your doctor and get an idea of what's causing your pain.
I suffer from back pain and numbness everyday. Weight lifting has helped and when I brought my weight down that really helped.

Get an MRI done to see exactly what is taking place, take an honest look at yourself too from diet, exercise, posture etc.
Sometimes simple adjustments make huge differences with regards to your overall health.
Good luck.

A possible solution could be simpler than one might think. Ditch the chair get a ball (any medical implement store will know what I’m talking about). It will change your life.

If you’re a side sleeper, try a pillow between your knees. If back sleeper, under your knees. Before you get out of bed in the morning, stretch a bit by pulling your knees up to your chest both one at a time and both at once. I’ve always got back pain and that helps me. The first couple hours of the day are painful for me almost every day until I get limbered up.

I was in the exact same shoes for 4 years, very active but intermittent back pain. I kinda sorta treated it by going to the chiropractor and taking robax. Currently dealing with my 12th month of rehab for a torn L5 disk. Nothing in my back works right because i left it too long. No hunting, no fishing, no work, couldn’t lift my daughter out of her crib for 4 months. Lost pretty much everything I care about aside from family and it’s been hell on them.

You need an MRI

After that, I found PROPER, SUPERVISED lifting under the instruction of a physio approved rehab strength coach, dry needling, yoga and kinstretch, fish oil, and chiropractor have got me at least somewhat mobile. It took months of twice daily rehab workouts on my part. Currently booked for a cortisone shot to get over the hump.

There is nothing more important than your health. Dedicate the time and energy, every damn day. Fix it before it gets worse, believe me it will.

Consider purchasing an inversion table. They are pricing but they go on sale often enough. I have a Teeter and use it for 10 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night. It relieves any back pain issues for me. Also massage/massage chair/yoga (DDP) all help. Good luck

Don't let it fester, is all I can say. Be an advocate for yourself and push your medical professionals hard for answers. Don't play your pain down and put on a tough face for the doc; if it's interfering with your life, it needs to be looked at. It's hard when a baggy of NSAIDs or opiates is the default "shoo-away".

10 years in and my carpentry career has ended after several years of decline, despite honest and expensive attempts at physio, chiro, massage, exercise, and trigger point injections. X-rays, bone scans show no obvious damage. Always active, always fighting through the pain, figured everyone in the trades felt this way.

The two most helpful treatments I have found - self-directed stretching/exercise, and dry needling. Dry needling really lets me "see" through the tight muscles and identify what is so painful beneath.

Currently jumping through the hoops to get an MRI. Even if I pay for it out of pocket, still need that physician's requisition. Seems our medical system is hellbent on providing every form of care except meaningful imaging.

I second the swimming with a quick hot tub dip to end your session. Maybe 3 times a week. I get free facility access in my area and it's something I scoffed at for a few years until my wife and I were in Revelstoke back in August and she convinced me to take a swim with her at the hotel pool and I kid you not, it was like every pain in my body from pulling wrenches on heavy equipment just went away. The weightlessness feels amazing. It genuinely almost brought me to tears how happy I was that the constant aches were gone and have in general stayed away since then. And I'm only in my mid 20s.

Edit: I also have a knee problem known as Osgood schlatters disease that has been problematic as long as I can remember with no real surgical fix. Swimming has really helped keep the pain manageable.
