Banff borders
Is most of the perimeter of Banff fenced or is it just high traffic areas like next to freeways and roads?

I lived there for a couple years. There is no way the entire perimeter of the park is fenced like elk island park. Would prevent wildlife from coming and going and the terrain would make it almost impossible. I believe the fences you see are to help with collisions with wildlife on the highway, along with the wildlife crossings/ overpasses

In the back country, no infrastructure, you have to be damned careful you don't accidentally end up in the park, while hunting, or even pick something which would be against park rules. But, it is patrolled.

Even the front country boundary of Banff National Park is unfenced. The TransCanada Highway is fenced to keep animals off - not the boundaries.

Locked and Loaded . Last one made it to the outskirts of Sundre. I asked, what if they ended up in the Banff townsite? Garbled response.

If the whole thing was fenced , the Wolves they turned loose would still be there

Much chagrin and teeth gnashing by certain people now that they are pushing up Daisies.

Maybe, when it's frozen.

There’s a hand cut line about a yard wide along the eastern boundary of Banff National Park. Most of it is marked with T posts about every 50m and some still have the old boundary signs but no fence. It’s pretty easy to find if you know what to look for.

At the right time in the right place behind the bow river campground you can cross the bow river on foot but it will be over your chest waders deep with one missed step and your swimming. Or you could just drive down the 1a. Farther upstream there a lot of access in the nordic Center area where you can creatively use vehicle bridges to cross
