Has any one heard anything about Don's gunsmithing? I have been calling and leaving messages for a couple of months with no reply.

I have never heard of Don's Gunsmithing but see he is listed in Rocky Mountain House. If he won't even answer phone or email enquiries when you are looking to deal with him I sure as heck would not be pursuing that. There are a bunch of top notch smiths in the Edmonton area and out towards Rocky. Try one of them instead would be my advise.

with all due respect to don he is past his prime,
maybe for bluing or a buttpad but that is it

a decade ago going to Rocky I might stop in,once a year in the spring to see if he had anything odd for sale

he was a bit of a drinker or had a lisp that got worse as the day went on

he liked to visit and, did, not want to work much

he might have been really good a couple of decades ago but now

not so much if at all

I believe he lives on the highway, north of Rocky. He must be getting a little long in the tooth though , since I' ve seen his sign for at least 30 years or more.

Drunken Dons gun fing up. Is the common term around here.
Buddy and i dropped off a old 7x57 that the bolt handle broke off.
An Old mauser.
Went back to pick it up a week or so later.
He put a bolt out of another gun he had been working on. Carved out the stock to fit it.
Welded the handle onto his bolt(completely the wrong angle)
When he handed the gun over. We said this is not the bolt from our gun. He proceeds to tell us he is is just the gun smith what the hell does he know.
The bolt had the wrong type of safety that how we knew right away.
Spotted the other gun in the rack with our bolt serial numbers matched.
Showed him. Swapped bolts so it was correct.
Gun is totally useless with a bolt handle sticking out sideways and a wrecked stock.
And he still wanted to Be paid.
Last time i have been there.
That was 7-8 years ago.

Jesuss am I glad I never heard of this Dickwad. I have heard of these kind of hack operators but have always been lucky to deal with first class guys. The cheapest or handiest is clearly not always the best choice.Run Forest, Run.

He was awesome at one time. Did some great work.
Heart of gold to.
He just didn't learn when to quit though. He loves to visit to much.
Has his issues but is a good man.

He did a great job for me. Rebarreled a RPA Quadlock. Mind, that was probably 20 years ago.

Hope you get your firearm back. Maybe the Vid-19 got him? Bodies are stacking up high I hear...

would not leave it very long my spicy sense is telling me he is near shutting it down and if a drunk he would not care

Damaged my high end Austrian 300 win mag rifle while hunting west of Nordegg couple years back. Don repaired it right while I was waiting, very pleased with the quality work.

Just came across this thread two years later but thought i'd chime in, in case anyone else does the same.

Don shortened the barrel on my .375 H&H maybe five, six years ago. Cut it, re-crowned it, re-blued it, re-installed barrel-band front sight. If there was anything wrong with the job i sure can't detect it, and the rifle remained a tack-driver when i picked it up.

I was perfectly pleased. Not suggesting a person isn't careful, but just wanted to pitch-in another true account.

Oh, and he did it for $100.

Sounds like this smith is hit and miss regarding workmanship etc.

Respect is earned, not given. Doesn't seem like this guy has earned much respect recently.

It is disappointing to read the name calling from someone who only read a post and has no past dealings with Don at all.

LOL. Age doesn't automatically garner respect. Lots of old people are dirtbags. I would hope that when I'm old I've lived and continue to live a life worthy of the respect of younger folks.

If a guy ruins a rifle and hands it back like nothing is wrong with it, and the customer has to find his bolt knob on someone else’s rifle? Um, I think Dickwad would be an appropriate adjective, regardless of age.

To the fella who has a rifle there, go bang on his door and get your gun.

Two sides to every story.

Don helped me repair a old Remington 22 about 25 years years ago. He shop was just down the road from the farm. He was kind then and helpful.
