with the melting snow out here you could tell which was new and that all we needed to add a couple more to the bag

same drive as yesterday but different results

Default Location criteria for rabbits pls

Hi David,

Love your rabbit hunting posting. I tried rabbit hunt a couple of times without any luck -didn't spot any rabbits. Wonder if you can shed some light on your experience finding locations for rabbit spotting.

Do you guys ever get sick of eating rabbit? I guess that is why I only hunt the rabbit every now & then. I just like to take 1 or 2 once in awhile over a space of time (sometimes years) just to savour the meat. I guess it is like that for me with grouse too when the season is open I just take a few & that is it.

First look for lots of tracks then if you can see where they have eaten bark off trees and also the most important is the rabbit dropping if there is no poop then there is no rabbits period

Also for all .... the pictures are taken were where the wind and sun clear a spot beside road.... the bush has 3 ft of snow

Ok so other than the trapper or pies you don't don anything special with the meat.
Any good whitefish recipes?

I could have looked on YouTube also but I was thinking a guy that catches as many fish as you do must have some good recipes that are a fav.
I like mine baked or lightly breaded and fried. If you cut it in strips and "fish crisp" then make a guacamole and Greek yogurt with a bit of hot sauce dip lettuce tomato and soft taco shells makes for a great fish taco!!

Question Couple of questions

Speckle, assuming that you are the fellow in the white overalls, the other gent standing up looks very familiar to me. A contract operator from the High River area perhaps?

My second question isn't meant to raise issues or what have you. But do you eat the rabbits? I ask because I have a beagle hound that I would love to hunt with. I have just been given a Garmin tracking collar on a trial basis. Although I've eaten plenty of domestic rabbits, never wild ones. I'm curious as to what to look for in terms of disease, infection and what not to make them safe to eat.

I'd also love to hook up with an experienced "Beagler" for a fun day afield with our dogs. There is an abandoned rail line nearby which would likely yield a good bounty.

Nope on the High River ..work here all his life.. he is my Bro..

and I am the guy in white military coverall

Yes to eating rabbits, all though these ones are for a trapper he put in a order for the lynx season.. and my buddy that has 5 kids here loves them so he will take what ever he can get right now .. so we can hunt our hearts out and not waste any!! and yes to hunting down on the old Grand Trunk railroad to the dunes with dogs or up by Hinton /Jasper airport ..I used to have a Great Dane /Black Lab cross that I had trained for WABBITS .. what a shame I lost him to that Piero Virus .. that one hurt allot he was just past 2 yrs old and what a bird /rabbit ... voice command and hand signals .. huge dog .. piece of my heart died with him..

on the rabbit diseases I posted on what to watch on another post but its the liver and the ears /body will show the blisters

will see if I can find post when I get back going wabbit hunting

David

Default rabbits for lynx bait

Geez, I've found dead rabbits are really not good bait for catching lynx. Actually, really poor. I use beaver and lynx meat.

Wasn't trying to offend you David, just stating what I found. I had 2 pens that I used rabbit, and they were still hanging there when I quoted out. Nothing touched them, but beaver and lynx meat was always chewed on or gone. I found that lynx prefer live rabbits, not frozen ones. I won't know what the lynx are worth until after the auction.
