Question Graphite powder as gun lube?

Today I went to Acklands and picked up a tube of superfine graphite powder for my Lee powder measure and while reading the package it said it was good for use on guns. What I'm wondering is, are there any advantages or disadvantages to using it instead of oil (on the sliding surfaces) or has anyone ever used the stuff in that capacity before.

It works but doesn't last as long as molybdenum disulfide...

Works great with magazines, airgun pistons, etc...

Smile In the winter

In the days when it was oil or nothing. Oil was no good, the firing pin on my old .22 wouldn't move fast enough to fire the shell. Switched to graphite and it worked great, used it for speedometer cables too.

I can't imagine molybdenum disulfide powder is very easy to find although Acklands has MP-50 moly paste by jet lube that would in theory work better than just straight powder because it adds the added protection from rust but there is the fact that it probably doesn't have a very high molybdenum disulfide content.

Brownell's has it in stock in paste form.

Couple different options here as well;

I use grahpite occasionally, and have for 30 or more years, as well as jet-Lube, and Lubri-Pplate lithium grease.
Birchwood Casey says a moly grease for choke tubes as well, but I do not use annyhthingn that heavy on bolts or any other moving parts except shotgun hinges.
Anything heavier that G96 spray does not go near my bolt action match rifles, not does it get used on any bolt action hunting rifles that people get me to work on.

Did any of you guys tried Ballistol? That is what I use pretty much for all my gun lubing needs.

It is said in the jungle that you can even use it to clean wounds... :-)

Use it on my BP guns.
I bought a small can years ago from Abacrombie and Fitch - about the only thing Ii could afford in the whole danged store!!
It had their name on it, but I know now it was repackaged Ballistol.
