I managed a tag for an anterless elk in 521 this January. I've never hunted that late in the season before and am very excited about it. Work for me gets super busy and stressful around xmas so it will be nice to have this hunt to look forward to.
I'm relatively new to elk hunting in general but have done a lot of reading over the past couple years. It's been nothing but deer and bear hunts for me so far. Most info is based around the rut though and not winter hunting. Maybe there are a few veterans out there that can share a bit of late season elk hunting advice with a rookie. Cheers!
Land owner permission at that time of the year is the way to go.
A crown land hunt in Jan is tough tough.
We have 2 Valleyview Jan cow elk tags, WMU 360.
Good luck.
If there is any amount of snow by then alot of the farmers will point you to the bale yard where they will be chasing the cattle out to feed. That tag is a good one to get alot of the no hunting area turn in to please come shoot one of these 100 cows in my pasture areas.
Thanks for the tips guys. Looks like permission to private land may be the key. I've never tasted elk but hear that it is fantastic. Hopefully my freezer will be stocked by the end of January!
