Sturgeon Rod Help

I am wondering about recommendations for a rod for Alberta sturgeon fishing from shore. Which power, action and length would be ideal? I want something heavy enough to cast 4 or 5 ounce weights far, but light enough to see light bites. I don't need high end, hopefully something under $150. Thanks guys.

I use a heavy action 9' cabelas $100 special, just look for something with a soft tip section for bite detection and your good to go,most times I feel you can get away with 3oz weights between the mass flow of last year to this year seemed to work just fine.Good luck

What model rod is that? You are happy with it?

DUDE ..I have one for sale for $19.99 here...I will give it 2u...you just have to have an AO member chop it for you ... I will even sell you an abu garcia 10000 big game level wind spooled with 100lb super braid for $100...the line alone is close to $100 ...you just have come up EDM way to get it

If you are willing to bump up to 199 then the Shimano technium sturgeon rod is about the best. Heavy with a extra fast tip.

Edit: The guy above this post has a lamiglas for free. That's a beauty of a rod. If I was near Edmonton I would have bought it a while ago

They do exist in some peoples opinions. haha Some people use the uglystick fiberglass poles and they say its sensative.

Perfectly happy. Sensitivity is not an issue, catch lots of small burbot and chubs, can feel every nibble.

Mine has an Abu Garcia C4 round reel and 80 pound Powerpro. If you ever get snagged you either pull whatever you snagged on out of the river or the hook straightens lol.

I use an 9’, two piece ugly stick elite xh, labelled as a salmon/steelhead rod. I have them paired with a Penn Squall 20 casting reel, great for casting 4-6 oz weights with 50# braid, and pretty sensitive tip. The other weekend was catching lots of small burbot and the bites were easily detected. $100 at Cabelas, and got the last one on sale for $80

sensitivity is just not important on the NSR since we are just soaking bait anyways.

100% it is. Sometimes sturgeon bite is so light you don't notice it without a sensitive rod.

I don't fish for sturgeon to much since I hate soaking bait.
I just wait till the rod bends and bobs so I have to visually see it. Maybe that's why I haven't caught a sturgeon.

8' MH ugly stik catfish. I find it plenty sensitive and it's got more than enough meat to handle a 50+lb fish should you encounter one. I've got a 4000 series Piscifun honor xt reel on that rod with 50lb braid.....you could be all into that setup for about $120-130. I personally don't feel I miss too many bites....it quivers and moves on those real subtle fish and trust me I seem to find plenty of small fish in the NSR lol. It also doubles as a trolling rod on the boat for big heavy swimbaits.

I'd definitely be interested but I don't see a trip to edm in the near future. I appreciate the offer though.

Another option is team Catfish rods. They are around $100 usd.

Any rod rated for salmon, Catfish or the like is good.

I use the cabels whippin stick and also a daiwa beef stick, both are good rods.

Decathlon has tons of European carp rods and they are anywhere from 70$ to 150$ and designed for long casts and fighting big carp. You can certainly find one which will work for sturgeon too. Their braided lines are the cheapest on the market too.
