Default Private gun sale. Now what???????????

I am in the process of selling a gun to another member here on the forum. With the ever changing gun laws do I still have to transfer the gun over to the new owner? Im going to the CFA web site to see what info is on there. Just thought I would post it here aswell as Im probably not the only one selling a gun privatly.

Newsflash-the registry is gone! Look at the buyer's PAL, take his money, give him the gun, then thank him, and be on your way.

1) if you have a PAL and he has a PAL...ask to see his PAL, take the money and give him the gun
2) If you have a PAL and he doesn't, don't sell him the gun- illegal.
3) If you don't have a Pal and he does....you are in trouble...

Just wanting some advice from some members on this form like thousands of posts here every year. I guess the last part of you user name just about sums it up. Thanks for your valuable input to this form once again.

You are welcome! "Maybe try keeping up with current gun laws". Just trying to help the "slower ones".

How do you do this if your buying or selling a firearm from someone over the phone or through the exchange?

Just curious

Technically speaking, you don't even have to see a PAL. You can take his or her word for it if you have no reason to believe they are lying. I like that better.

I've sold a rifle to a member of the forum and to confirm he had a pal and to confirm it was valid I just asked if he could email me a pic of his license. This member had no problem with it and the sale was a breeze

If you can't trust a person to do what they need to, that's not really your problem is it? If they don't and get caught, not really your problem as I see it.

Default buying a firearm

The buyer shows his pal , pays the seller and obtains a BILL OF SALE. Whats to say the seller does not turn around and report it stolen??? The buyer should have some sort of receipt to prove he bought it and paid in full. CYA thats what I always say, Just saying...

I would imagine that if you sell something on a forum there would be emails or messages back and forth discussing the deal....this would provide evidence of an intent to purchase OR of a purchase taking place.

Use due diligence and common sense.....simple.

This will undoubtedly come as a real shock to some but prior to 1978, we just exchanged the gun for cash or trade goods. No more hassle than selling and old tire. It was great. Didn't have to have a sales clerk hold our hand to buy a box of 22 shells either. Leeper

Exactly! If the gun is restricted, you still need to transfer/register it.

No, it isn't.

Happily, this legislation says exactly that. That's why it does not require you to request that a buyer produce his PAL to you. If you have a reason to doubt that she or he has one, you should ask to see it. If I don't, I won't.

As Leeper pointed out, it wasn't all that long ago that you bought long guns and ammo like you bought oranges and milk. There was no problem with that. The only "problem" was created in some liberal minds and with enough irrational, baseless fear-mongering, those liberals got a lot of other people to feel the fear. No facts. Just fear. It was stupid, shameless, self-serving propaganda and I will not be a part of it unless I absolutely have to. I don't have to require production of a PAL all the time and I'm not going to.

We all need to decide for ourselves if we want to support these laws. Comply with legal requirements, yes. But this thread is about more than that, isn't it?

Ah, those were the days!

owner: Well howdy young feller, what's new?
Me : Howdy mr. Smith Sir, I'm heading out with Johnny down the road this morning to the lake, I meeting him a the corners.
We're going to do some fishing and shoot some gophers.
I need some 410's, Dad forgot to bring some home and all we got loaed is skeet stuff.
Owner: 3" 6's okay?
Me: Yup, that's great - oh we need a can of beans, two packs of Twinkies
, two bottles of coke and two bottles of Dr. Pepper, a package of weaners, just in case we don't get any rabbits!
Owner : now you two be careful, make sure you have your guns tied tight , not like the last time . and tell Johnny down the road that his mom doesn't smoke Players, so the next time he comes in for ciggarettes I'll have to phone home and ask what brand, just to be sure!
