fishing south of Lethbridge?
Hi all,
I am going to hunt huns in the south third week of Sep and I was wondering if there is any fishing there? I might take a trip to the foothills on the West side.
No boat, so it has to be shore fishing.
Any advice on species, tackle and techniques would be appreciated.
Thanks

How far are you willing to travel? There is fishing inside Lethbridge at Henderson Lake, Nicholas Sheran Pond on the west side, and the Old Man River in the valley. There are lots of other places within an hour drive, depending on what kind of fish you want to go after.

Thanks for the reply. I am really clueless :-)
I will be likely in Taber or may be Medicine Hat area.
What fish can I get there? I guess, I am most interested in trout.
On the map it looks pretty dry except some fairly large lakes.

I think that most of the lakes in the Taber / Medicine Hat area will have warm water fish like pike, walleye, and perch. I know Bullshead SE of Medicine hat is a trophy trout lake, but I have not fished there before. Some of the irrigation reservoirs like Chin, or Milk River Ridge can be fished from shore, but I think a boat would be a big advantage. If you want trout you're probably better off heading west of Lethbridge to the Pincher Creek area.

There are a few trout lakes in the Elkwater area. But in southern AB. the only 3 I know of are Henniger Tyrell & the Formost trout pond. This time of the year and the hot weather we have been getting the trout will not be good eating out of those lakes.Henniger& Formost would be your best bet. They are small lakes easy to fish from shore.

As I said, I am going hunting huns, if I have down time I'd like to go fishing,
driving couple hours is not an issue.
I might travel to the foothills to try for blue grouse. I am sure there are streams and lakes to try.
I know I am asking vague questions :-)
Just looking at the map - how about Oldman river?

castle falls is like 1.5 hours from lethbridge and you can stand on the rocks and catch trout form the 20ft deep pool at the bottom of the lil waterfall,
best part of it is you can see them all swiming around and its a beautiful spot, also at the bottom of waterton res you can catch browns all day long at the bottom of the dam , but some better spots for you to go this time of year would be the forks on the SSR just north of grassy lake , its a really cool spot , and the big walleye are gonna start bitting , my buddy just pulled out a 10 pounder from there , and theres the odd sturgeon there aswell, just use P rigs with minnows, or shurburn lake in the evening with crank baits or slip bobbers for some evening walleye ,
Good luck

Yes you can fish the forks from shore.
It is where the oldman and the bow meet to form the SSR.
There is camp spots there and it is just a self registration with no cost.
If you have a small aluminum you can also launch that and cruise around the big pool out in front of the island.
