Must be very tough wolves where you hunt, I've used those same calibers under those same conditions you describe. To take a direct hit in the chest from a 30-06 and then get up and go thirty yards before dying is amazing.
I have shot quite a few and have only had to take follow up shots when shooting a 204 or using SX type bullets in a swift. Also a semi-auto would be a poor choice in my opinion.
