Edit... Just looked into it and if my eyes are 6 feet above the ground I have a horizon of 3 miles on a calm lake, so yeah it seems reasonable instead of absurd. Thanks for proving the point.
I've personally tried it out to 5.5 km. Still clearly visible. That's 7.7' of drop with the entire canoe still visible to the waterline. Sitting on the shore or standing up, makes no difference, the exact same amount of boat is visible with a 3' difference in height. This is easily done by anyone. Try it for yourself? Makes no difference to me, you're free to believe what you want.
