I would try and get something with a little bit longer barrel if going with .243. Ideally I would go with .260, 7mm08 or .308 and a 22" barrel with reduced hand loads to start.
The .243 Win has a fair amount of muzzle blast from a 20" barrel. The recoil is tameable, but a flinch from the muzzle blast is a posibility. I had a 20" barreled .243 Win and it had more muzzle blast than my .300.
I use a 7mm08 as a my do everything rifle. It is a very capable round.
