I went hog hunting a few years back in Sask on a ranch near Battle River. It was awesome. I shot this beast with a 12 guage with SST slugs. Seriously, hogs this big require something large. The armour plate they have around their midsection is two inches thick, and thats under an inch of hide. I aimed for the shoulder and, as I was only 20 yards away and shaking like a leaf, I was lucky to hit it in the neck and jugular. The tusks were five inches long and it weighed 310 pounds. The hide and head weighed 150 alone. I shot a second one that was around 75 pounds that could have been taken with a .223 or .243.
