Depends entirely on what kind of competition you are interested in, 50 meter prone, Silhouette, rimfire BR, Biathlon, what level, club, provincial, National international. If you are serious about shooting RF BR then a custom made gun is the only way to be really competitive above the club level. Since you are just starting out I would strongly suggest an Anschutz of the proper configuration for the most likely competition you are to shoot.
Quality ammo is the biggest consideration if you want to be competitive and shooting high end ammo can very quickly exceed the cost of the gun. Eley Tenex goes for $20 a box so 5000 rounds and you have paid for a Anschutz Target gun. There are very few factory guns that would be competitive in most types of competition for anywhere near the price.
