My first pistol 2 years ago was a Ruger P944 in .40 S&W, at the time it was $499 new at Wholesale, I put on a pair of Hogue rubber grips and an extra magazine and it was a very functional pistol. Interestingly, shortly after I sold it, some of the Ruger carbines showed up at Shooting Edge, which use the same magazine. I think the pair would make for a fun matched combination. Being all steel, it was milder recoiling than some of my plastic framed pistols that I bought after it.
