Sure a fence post will catch dozens of fish ....but a decent rod would have allowed you to land hundreds.
A fence post seems like an effective tool if you can't feel a bite or pickup ..... if you never know it .......
on the other hand a fence post sure is durable.
..........you decide what makes sense for you.
