You were in a fine area. My guess is not deep enough. I fish the area and do really well. I had difficulty here as well it is deeper then you think and a heck of a lot faster. Everyone says 1.5 X then the depth of the water. That may be a good starting point. But not set in stone. I fish with a 13' leader this is imposible with a spining rod. Spinning rods are good for chucking lures thats about it. Try a #4 panther martin cast up stream let it drift on a slack line for a 10 count. Slow roll retrive is deadly in deep pools.
