I generally load only 40gr of 3031 for 425gr hard cast bullets which produces around 1400 FPS out of my Marlin 1895. The highest I ever loaded was to 54gr (compressed) of 3031 but it was pretty stout and plenty of un-burnt powder. I have also used IMR 4198 with good success as well in the 45-70.
