We started with the keeping count by memory, which is sketchy at the best of times.  Then switched to keeping count on a note pad, which was a PITA trying to fish it out of a pocket while juggling a loaded rifle. Now, we use tally counters on a cord. Much easier to remember add 3, versus was I at 36 or 39?
