Had the same cat issue here in DV back in the mid 90’s. The worst offender was the Siamese cat owned by one of our town councillors. The damned thing wandered everywhere. Town council was in the midst of debating a cat control bylaw back then, guess which councillor was the only one to vote against the bylaw?
So at one point this cat got into my garden shed while I was busy mowing the lawn. I cornered the wayward feline and through the judicious use of welding gauntlets and a sturdy cardboard box I managed to duct tape the box shut with kitty in the box, then I punched a few air holes in the box. It was a crying shame I fumbled the box a few times and further my clumsiness resulted in a few rolling kicks at the box accross my backyard.
I delivered my neighbour the town councillor his cat in the box, explaining where I found him. He was gob smacked to say the least.
A while later~6 or more months, my wife gets a visit from one of the RCMP from town. Apparently someone poisoned the wayward Siamese cat, and it died back at his home. The Corporal was interested in my wearabouts, but soon left knowing I was 2-1/2 weeks into a 3 week shift in Zama at the time.(and no I never left anything to poison the cat) it seems that I wasn’t the only one in the neighbour hood this cat was visiting.

As for the live trap, be careful as here in DV only animal control can set out such traps legally.
