Didnt realise how old this thread was when I started reading it
But what caught my eye was a reference to the 22 varmint I have not heard in probably 30 years. My second rifle was a custom BRNO made by a Calgary gun smith for a neighbor who had lent me the rifle to clean up the coyote that were attacking his geese in his ponds. Rifle had a period K4 Weaver unit that was like looking through a keyhole into a bright light. The 22 Varmint was still a wildcat being a necked down 250 casing and he also gave me the original Hollywood dies which I still have marked "22 varmint". Years later it became popular as the 22-250.
Have also used the 30-06 as my primary big game rifle for many years but that 22 varmint and many other 22-250's since still get the bulk of the action each year.
