Although it has been many years since I've been involved in a long distance move, every time U-Haul was used, we had to deal with breakdowns. One even required an overnight stay on the side of the road and crossloading into a replacement POS the next afternoon.
Avoid U-Haul for long distance moves! When they know it isn't coming back, the local franchise office will give you their worst truck, so it goes away and is no longer their maintenance headache. They are generally OK for local stuff and when they know the truck is coming back to them.

Check with Ryder and Budget, I believe they both offer 1-way rentals.
Have you thought about PODS? They deliver the container, you load it, they move it, store it if necessary, and deliver it to you when you're ready. The convenience of loading a grade level container might offset a marginally higher cost over renting a truck.
