I use St.Croix ice rods, a little longer than most of my other ice rods, but great for bigger fish like lakers.

I think they are 38" Med Heavy.

I love these rods because it has a true reel seat (and not silly slip on bands), and the rods are built tough - so when you step on them, impale your doorway on the way into the tent, or have that jaw jacker explode and the rod whips you in the face - they survive the unique abuse the ice season brings with my clumsiness and stupidity.

As with all St.Croix rods, they are very sensitive and that's great when the fish are being sneaky and nibbling.

I generally use a spinning reel from summer fishing for lakers that hold lots of line. In shallow water, going after pike, I use a frabill center pin reel.
