i think have close to 2 dozen coyotes with a .17 hmr inside 130 yards, none lost, had to trail a couple when i tried the 20 gr xtp load as they just poked holes but found them inside 100 yards(like trailing lung/heart shot deer), went back to the 17 gr tnt as the perfect acreage coyote/beaver load, most spun and down on the spot, the odd 30-40 yrd runner, the v-max was ideal for gophers(bit more explosive and frangible than the tnt, no ricochets whatsoever)

as for .204, i had tikka varmints and shot the factory federal 39 gr blitzking load when you could still get that ammo, shot 1" groups at 250 yards easy, and 2-3" groups at 500-520 yards, everything i shot with it died really well also

no way coyotes will walk from a .204 at 500 yards with 39/40 gr loads

i ran 250 yard zero on my .204's (1" high at 100 on my hmr for close to 150 yrd pbr)
