Here's a little info on the Bibio:
Hook:Size 10-14 wet fly hook (ited them on a 12)
Body: Black, Red and Black (3 parts seals fur)
Body: Oval silver (I used french tinsel which give a nice sparkle)
Body hackle: Black cock
Head hackle: Black Hen
The original dressing is attributed to Major Charles Roberts of the Burrishoole Fishery, Country Mayo, Ireland. He was a long time vistor of the fishery and fishery manager for several decades.
It was orignally tied to represent the heather beetle for seatrout on loughs Furnace and Feeagh, and also the bibio fly common there.
Usually used as a top dropper in a team of flies, I used it in Alberta as a single fly very succesfully on lakes with a floating line, slow retrieve or quick little strokes with a short pause in between. It stays just near the surface film, just underneath and makes a nice movement with the added sparkle of the rib. The brookies were going very aggressively for it, especially later in the season. Also worked great for brown trouts in streams when they weren't going for anything else on the surface.
