Problem is the contaminated water gets into the ecosystem. For instance, use salmon as an example that spend part of their time in freshwater before heading out to the ocean. The Fraser River is a very polluted water way. Year after year generations of salmon are hammered with this polluted water. This probably explains in part one of the reasons why salmon numbers are on the decline.
